Cuando un famoso sociólogo, escritor y profesor en la década de los sesentas, le preguntó a sus alumnos cual era el instinto más fuerte que existe, algunos contestaron que el sexual, otros el de supervivencia, pero ninguno contestó que el territorial. Entonces les pidió que sumaran en el siglo 20 los muertos por defender un territorio, versus aquellos muertos en las lides del amor. El resultado era obvio. El instinto más fuerte que existe es sin duda el territorial, pues en el territorio es donde las personas amamos, trabajamos, nos reproducimos y sobrevivimos. Sin embargo, hay muertos por amor como fue el caso de la guerra de Troya y muchas otras. Los juegos del amor y de la guerra siempre han estado allí. También podrían llamarse juegos de amor y muerte, pues en le mayoría de los casos el perdedor es castigado con la muerte. Basta observar una manada de ciervos, lobos o leones para entender que sólo el más fuerte logra salirse con la suya y pasarle sus genes a la siguiente generación. En los seres humanos la cosa es un poco más complicada, por eso nos inventamos reglas, y hermandades secretas unas visibles y otras no, de galantería, cortesía, etiqueta y educación, tal vez con ellas pretendiendo nivelar al más fuerte, con el más débil, el menos listo o el menos acomodado. En los juegos del amor y de la guerra, unos ganan y otros pierden. La victoria del vencedor equivale a la vida, la derrota muchas veces a la muerte propia o de los súbditos. La historia del emperador Tiberio escrita por el famoso médico, científico y escritor madrileño Gregorio Marañón así lo demuestra. En el caso de Tiberio el hecho de haberse expatriado de su territorio y auto desterrado primero a la isla de Rodas, en parte huyendo de los escándalos sexuales protagonizados por su mujer a quien odiaba y más adelante a la isla de Capri por temor de morir asesinado en Roma, lo resintió hasta tal punto que lo hizo un ser inseguro, conflictivo, triste y violento, viviendo el equivalente a la muerte por causa del exilio. La explicación la resume en una frase el doctor Marañón: "El hombre hace de la patria su hogar, mientras que la mujer hace del hogar la patria". Los excesos de pedofilia y sadomasoquismo de Tiberio en Capri fueron conocidos por el pueblo, muriendo asesinado por Calígula y Macro. La descripción de las crueldades de Tiberio las resume el historiador Tácito de manera impresionante: "Las ejecuciones se han convertido en un estímulo para su furia, y ha condenado a muerte a todos los encarcelados acusados de colaborar con Sejano. Allí se encuentran, separados o en montones, un sinnúmero de muertos de todos los sexos y edades. No se permitió a parientes y amigos estar cerca de ellos, llorar su muerte o siquiera mirarlos. Espías establecieron rondas para anotar a los dolientes que osaban acercarse. Cuando los cadáveres estuvieron putrefactos, se los arrastró al Tíber, a cuyas aguas se los arrojó. La fuerza del terror y la crueldad extinguieron la pena". Algunas veces el futuro se abre mostrando un resultado inesperado sin que tengamos una explicación aparente. Se dice que nada, absolutamente nada, sucede sin una intervención sobrenatural, pero esa creencia está lejos de mentes científicas en donde todo se demuestra en forma empírica. Los que mantienen esta posición no creen en la naturaleza premonitoria o profética de los sueños. Para estos la ciencia y la religión son conceptos opuestos, descartando la idea de una mano poderosa que a veces interviene en el destino humano. Alex Glenn era uno de ellos.
