They live in tight matriarchal herds led by the largest female of the group. Male elephants leave the herd after 10-12 years of age and live the rest of their lives alone or with other males. The elephant diet consists of plant materials and cultivated crops of sugarcane and bananas. An adult will consume 300-400 lbs of food per day. Elephants mate during the rainy season and the female gives birth to one calf after 22 months. Newborn babies weigh 200-250 lbs and have no muscle tone in their trunks. It takes several months for a baby to gain control of its trunk.
