Es wird darin nicht nur eine Würdigung für den Nestor der klassischen Metallographie, sondern auch für den Vater der mikroskopischen Petrographie, Begründer der Mikrospektroskopie und Initiant der wissenschaftlichen Sedimentation vorgenommen. Gleichsam wird auch an den Vater der wissenschaftlichen Metallographie und Pionier der Materialprüfungsverfahren, Adolf Martens, sowie seinen wichtigsten Mitarbeiter, Emil Heyn, erinnert. Dies erfolgt aus der Tatsache heraus, daß die innovative Metallographie nicht ohne ihre Tradition sein kann und für ihre Zukunft die Herkunft braucht. Das Buch wird bereichert durch einen Abstract zur Herausbildung der Metallographie sowie den im Schlussteil gegebenen Schrifttumsempfehlungen. Begonnen wird mit den ersten visuellen Betrachtungen von Metalloberflächen sowie Bruchgefügen der Metalle und führt über den Beschau mittels erster optischer Mittel, wie Lesestein, Lupe, Vergrößerungsglas, einfacher Mikroskope bis hin zum makroskopischen und mikroskopischen Erschließen, Identifizieren, Festhalten und Photographieren der wahren Gefüge von Eisen, Stahl und anderer Metalle sowie ihrer Legierungen. Eingebunden ist Biographisches zu Sorby, namentlich zu seinem Lebenswerk für die Wissenschaft, zu seinem Maxime: "Ziel muß es sein, die Ursachen der Dinge zu entdecken!", aber auch seine Veröffentlichungen, Vorträge, Berufungen, Anerkennungen sowie sein institutionelles Engagement. Außerdem finden auch seine Leistungen auf den Gebieten Geologie, Botanik, Biologie, Umwelt- und Klimaschutz eine Berücksichtigung.
