Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 1999 im Fachbereich Germanistik - Neuere Deutsche Literatur, Note: 1,0, Universität Duisburg-Essen (FB Germanistik), Veranstaltung: Clemens Brentano (PS), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Die meisten Figuren in Brentanos Roman "Godwi oder Das steinerne Bild der Mutter" tauchen bereits in der ersten Hälfte des Romans auf. Eine Ausnahme davon bildet die Figur der Violette, die erst im zweiten Teil in die Romanhandlung eintritt. Allerdings findet hier nicht ihre eigentliche Person Erwähnung, sondern vielmehr ihr Grabmal, das von dem Erzähler Maria besichtigt wird. Dieses Grabmal zeigt die Apotheose Violettas, ihre Erhöhung im Tod. Kontrovers dazu ist die Beschreibung der Figur durch den Protagonisten Godwi, der die leidvolle Geschichte des Mädchens kennt und damit nicht die Heilige, sondern die Hure. Violetta vereinigt also zwei grundsätzlich verschiedene Seiten, die auf den ersten Blick nicht miteinander vereinbar scheinen. In den ersten zwei Kapiteln meiner Arbeit werde ich zunächst diese beiden verschiedenen Seiten ausführlich darlegen, um später in einem dritten Kapitel den Versuch zu unternehmen, das gleichzeitige Bestehen beider zu erklären. Dazu möchte ich erst einmal besonders auf die Beschreibung und Interpretation des Grabmals eingehen, um anhand dessen die 'Heiligkeit' der Violetta darzustellen. Dabei wird auch herauszustellen sein, daß Poesie und Liebe dem Leben unversöhnlich entgegenstehen. Dies möchte ich dann in einem nächsten Schritt an der Lebensgeschichte Violettes noch einmal hervorheben und deutlich machen, welche Funktion der Kunst dabei zukommt. Zum Schluß werde ich mich darum bemühen, beide Seiten aufeinander zu beziehen, sowohl die aus der Sicht Marias, als auch die aus der Sicht Godwis, um zu untersuchen, inwieweit sie miteinander vereinbar sind. Da es den Umfang einer Proseminar-Arbeit leider übersteigen würde, habe ich darauf verzichtet, näher auf die zahlreichen Parallelen zu anderen Romanfiguren einzugehen.
