About the Book

English summary: The antique culture of self-care lives on in a transformed state within the christian medieval and early modern times. The symbol and archetype for the religious concept of salvation is the Soter Jesus Christ. The antique concept is not replaced, in fact the two cultures of himself, a worldly and an otherworldly culture, are connected in a tense interrelation, which manifests itself differently depending on social status whether monastic contexts, lay aristocracy or housefathers. In the center of self-care in art and literature stands the human body, which makes the salvation tangible in the first place and which should nevertheless be transcended.
