Anhand ihrer Definitionen der Begriffe des Politischen und der Hegemonie soll eine mögliche Erklärung für aktuelle rechtspopulistische Bewegungen erörtert werden. Ernesto Laclau und Chantal Mouffe veröffentlichten vor 30 Jahren ihr Werk Hegemonie und radikale Demokratie, welches als moderner Klassiker der Sozial- und Politischen Theorie gilt und in dem sie erstmals eine "poststrukturalistische Diskurstheorie als umfassende Gesellschaftstheorie" (Martell 2014) entwerfen. Sie überarbeiten und hüllen das sozialistische Projekt in die Form der radikalen Demokratie. In ihrer Überarbeitung und Radikalisierung von Gramscis Hegemonietheorie reagieren Laclau/Mouffe auf die Ausweitung sozialer Kämpfe, wie sie in den erwähnten Protestbewegungen zum Ausdruck kommen. Zentraler Gedanke ihrer radikalen und agonistischen Demokratietheorie ist dabei, dass sich politische Konflikte weder neutralisieren noch als Feinde betrachten lassen. Vielmehr lebt Demokratie von Konflikten um die Hegemonie im demokratischen Raum. Chantal Mouffes agonistisches Demokratieverständnis geht darüber hinaus von wechselseitigen Gegner aus, die um die Hegemonie im demokratischen Raum streiten, allerdings nicht als Feinde mit dem Ziel der gegenseitigen Vernichtung. Dieser radikaldemokratische Ansatz wird im Verlauf dieser Arbeit dargestellt und als Analyserahmen für das aktuelle rechtspopulistische Phänomen mit dem Namen "Pegida" verwendet.
