About the Book

In this story, the reader is taken through the joy-filled matrimonial celebrations. Nomgqibelo and Banzi, with daughter Nomthiwelanga, are a new happier family. But when the inability to bear children stands between the couple, and sickness eats away Nomgqibelo's flesh, tension grows in the home, and an irreparable rift is wrought in their relationship. As a woman of strong and unshakable willpower, she tries everything within her abilities to protect her relationship or marriage but Banzi has drifted into a pool of alcoholism and external sexual pleasures elsewhere. Young as she may be, Nomthi gets to become Nomgqibelo's pillow of comfort in these trying matrimonial times. In the process, she sees what no child should see in her life, she experiences what no daughter should experience in her life, and she goes through the hell that burns her innocence so that she is temporarily reduced to a moving shell. When Nomgqibelo finally breathes her last, Banzi insists on marrying Nomthi, whom he has already impregnated. In this odd but culturally supported marriage, the abuse escalates, as Banzi continues to feed his insatiable, unpalatable lust on a child who he should have been protecting from the dangers and hazards of this world. She bears a girl child, and another unwanted pregnancy comes. The abuse continues. And this is where the reader gets to the horrifying opening of He Saw the Storm: She stood over his burning body and watched him burn to ashes: he was screaming and begging for mercy, but she was not shaken. She was eager to protect her children. Oblivious of the voices around, she felt a strong grip on her arm, and she collapsed to the ground. The children referred to here above are the ones whom Nomthi has conceived and borne in this strange marriage. Children are not strange to and for her, because they are the children of her womb. In all defiance and willpower reminiscence of her mothers', Nomthi seems to be shouting from a mountain top: "Look, I have been raped and impregnated! The children are of my womb and I will care for them. I love them."However, does Nomthi's proclamation reach all people of the world? Were all people of the world there when she needed them most in her inherited matrimonial house of abuse, sadness and horror? This is the house which claimed her mother's life. This is the house which has reduced her to nothing but a wing-chipped bird that refuses to stay on the ground because it is aware of the freedom that is found in the open air. It is, for that reason, for the bird itself to grow its wings back. But, now, how does that happen in the world of daughter-wife who must raise children with love in a loveless home which has been turned into a hell of a battlefield long before they are even born? Here are the children - Nongcebo and Phindile. They are on this gravity; they are the force to gravity, here to stay, and they are here to live. Because they are people. They are humans. Mother to these little souls stands gravely with bravery and watch the roaring, smouldering altar consume his flesh and bones. But now, does this kind of vengeful act not amount to a crime for which the perpetrator should be arrested and jailed for? She has set him alight because she wants to protect her children from the harm - abuse and torture. She wants to protect herself from continued daily battering which might soon result into her possible killing, and her children are consequently rendered motherless, just like it has been the case with her. But, above everything else, she has committed a crime. No-one is guilty until proven guilty by the court of law. And everyone who commits a crime must face the full might of the law. Whether she is a mother, daughter, or spouse. Or father, lover or brother - that perpetrator needs to stand trial in the court of law. It is in this stream of thought that the author is required to provide a sequel to this narrative
