Überlichtschnelle Flüge sind verboten, weil es sich erwiesen hat, dass diese auf Dauer das energetische Gleichgewicht des Universums und somit das Raum-Zeit-Gefüge stören, was in manchen Bereichen des Universums in der Vergangenheit zu schrecklichen Katastrophen geführt hat. Der so genannte HERR DER WELTEN wacht unnachgiebig über dieses Verbot. Das Verbot wurde nicht immer befolgt, weil es den HERRN DER WELTEN nicht schon immer gegeben hat. John Willard, der Diener des HERRN DER WELTEN, erfährt: Wenige Jahrhunderte in der Zukunft, von hier und heute aus betrachtet (und somit über eine Million Jahre in der Vergangenheit aus der Sicht von John Willard!), hatte der Mensch bereits einen Teil des Weltraums erobert. Überlichtschnelle Flüge wurden von hoch spezialisierten (und teilweise sogar regelrecht gezüchteten) so genannten PSI-Menschen durchgeführt. Man nannte sie in Anlehnung an einen Begriff aus der SF des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts der so genannten christlichen Zeitrechnung Psychonauten. Als der Ultimate-Konzern die Psychonauten mittels technischem Überlichtantrieb zu ersetzen trachtete, hatte das unabsehbare Folgen, was die negativ betroffenen Fremdrassen auf die Menschen aufmerksam machte und zu einer tödlichen Bedrohung werden ließ. Endlich sah auch Ultimate und mit dem Konzern das totalitäre Regime des menschlichen Imperiums ein, dass sie sämtliche Experimente in dieser Richtung einstellen mussten. Eine Friedensmission wurde gegründet, um die Völker des Universums zu besänftigen. Das Raumschiff ESPERANTO (zu deutsch etwa: Der Hoffende) wurde mit der Friedensmission auf den Weg geschickt. PSY 9.11, von den Rebellen auch verehrend DER GOLDENE genannt, berichtet...
