Una geoda tiene el aspecto de una simple roca (o de una cueva, en el caso de algunas geodas excepcionalmente grandes), pero si rompemos la roca encontramos en su interior cristales de sorprendente belleza.De igual manera, nuestro mundo, que presenta tan fascinante y hermosa apariencia a la percepción directa de nuestros sentidos, contiene una "belleza oculta" de distinta naturaleza. Es la belleza de unas sorprendentes relaciones, asombrosamente coordinadas, que son las que generan lo que experimentamos a través de nuestros sentidos y de la interpretación que el cerebro hace de las señales que le llegan de ellos. Y esas relaciones se comprenden y aprecian en todo su esplendor, cuando se entiende el lenguaje matemático en que hay que expresarlas. Galileo, el notable científico del "Renacimiento", dijo que las matemáticas son el lenguaje en el que están escritas las leyes de la naturaleza, y Paul Davies se hace eco de esas palabras, y explica que para comprender la hermosa "poesía de la naturaleza", hay que entender el "lenguaje" en el que está escrita, y se lamenta por el hecho de que muchísimas personas no puedan disfrutar de esa "dimensión estética" adicional.Este libro se ha escrito con la intención de que aquellos que experimentan lo que a veces se ha denominado "miedo patológico" a las matemáticas, y a los estudios de ciencias en general, comprueben que es posible vencer ese temor, y que tal vez puede ser más fácil de lo que piensan.Se ha redactado intentando que se pueda comprender sin necesidad de conocimientos previos.La primera parte es una consideración general de los descubrimientos científicos más relevantes, y de cómo se han obtenido, con unas pocas expresiones matemáticas fáciles, y cuyo significado se explica con sencillez, ilustrándolo con ejemplos muy familiares.En la segunda parte se hace un pequeño experimento: se ha intentado redactar una explicación sencilla y asequible de una de las ramas de las matemáticas que se consideran más difíciles, las de la Relatividad general de Einstein; si el lector las comprende, incluso aunque solo sea parcialmente, aumentará su confianza en que puede comprender otras partes que se consideran más fáciles.Si encuentra alguna dificultad, puede ayudarle la lectura previa de alguno de estos tres libros: "Matemáticas sin fórmulas: entendiendo los conceptos antes de utilizar los símbolos", "Sin ecuaciones, por favor", o "Ayuda para estudiantes: ¿Problemas con las matemáticas?.
