Seit jeher fasziniert Havanna, die Hauptstadt Kubas, durch ihren schillernden Charakter. Wegen ihrer afrikanischen und europäischen Wurzeln, die sich in einer einzigartigen Kultur äußern, wegen ihrer bewegten Geschichte, aber auch wegen ihrer vielseitigen Architektur, ihres eigenen Lichts und ihrer besonderen Lage übt Havanna eine spezielle Anziehungskraft aus. Als eine der ältesten Städte Lateinamerikas und der Karibik wurde sie schon früh mythisch verklärt: Galt sie unter den spanischen Kolonisatoren als 'Schlüssel zur neuen Welt', wurde sie später zum glitzernden 'Montecarlo der Karibik' und zur 'Krone der Antillen' (Grau 1988). Havanna wurde schon früh literarisch reflektiert: Erste kubanische Autoren begannen Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts, in Sittenschilderungen das städtische Leben zu beschreiben, aber auch ausländische Schriftsteller interessierten sich schon früh für das 'exotische' Havanna (Álvarez-Tabío 2000). Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit sollen Romane analysiert und kontrastiert werden, die sich auf das Havanna in den letzten Jahrzehnten vor der kubanischen Revolution von 1959 beziehen. Im Zentrum der Analyse soll Guillermo Cabrera Infantes Tres tristes tigres stehen, da dieser als kubanischer Roman eine spezielle Innensicht der Stadt bietet, die sich von den Darstellungen der nichtkubanischen Autoren abhebt. Die Vergleichsbasis stellen Oscar Hijuelos´ The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love und Graham Greenes Our Man in Havanna dar, jedoch sollen auch Ernest Hemingways To Have and Have Not und Islands in the Stream sowie die Havannapassage in Max Frischs Homo Faber in die Analyse einbezogen werden, wenn sich aus diesen Romanen ein interessanter Vergleich ergibt.
