Einleitung 30 Künstler bangen um ihre Existenz. Seitdem feststeht, dass das Kunsthaus Tacheles in der Oranienburger Straße in Berlin geräumt werden soll, ist erneut ein Kampf um das ehemalige Passagenkaufhaus entstanden. Am 13. Februar 1990 besetzte die Künstlerinitiative Tacheles die leerstehende Ruine. Bereits Anfang der achtziger Jahre hatte die Regierung des Landes Berlin damit begonnen, Teile des baufälligen Gebäudes zu sprengen. Mit der Besetzung des bis dahin noch erhalten gebliebenen Teils der Ruine forderte die Initiative den Stopp des Abrisses. Die Künstler ließen neue Gutachten zur Bausubstanz und Statik der Ruine erstellen. Aufgrund der positiven Auswertung der neuen Befunde konnte der erhalten gebliebene Teil des ehemaligen Kaufhauses 1992 unter Denkmalschutz gestellt werden. Die Besetzer konnten mit dem damaligen Eigentümer einen 10 Jahre laufenden Mietvertrag aushandeln, der eine symbolische Mietzahlung von einer Deutschen Mark, später 50 Cent, beinhaltete. Das Kunsthaus Tacheles ist mittlerweile zu einem Symbol der Subkultur über Berlin hinaus geworden. Mit seinen zahlreichen Ateliers und dem bekannten Cafe Zapata versprüht das Haus einen besonderen Charme in der ansonsten "sauber geleckten Stadtmitte." Seitdem der Mietvertrag aber Anfang 2009 auslief, wurden aus den Künstlern wieder Besetzer. Das Gelände soll geräumt werden, um einem Neubau Platz zu machen. Noch harrt eine kleine Künstlergruppe im Tacheles aus und hofft, auch in Zukunft weiter in ihrer Ruine leben und arbeiten zu können. Den Hausbesetzern in der Oranienburger Straße geht es vor allem darum, ein alternatives Kunstzentrum im Herzen der Stadt Berlin zu erhalten.
