David war ein begnadeter Bogenschütze. Im Jahr 1176, in der Schlacht von Legnano, konnte er mit seinen Bogenschützen den Angriff der feindlichen Reiter auf ihr Lager zu stoppen. Damit retteten sie Eintausendfünfhundert Fusssoldaten und Tausenden von Mägden und Knechten, welche das Feldlager von Kaiser Barbarossa unterhielten, das Leben. Der Kaiser hatte allerdings alle seine Ritter auf dem Schlachtfeld verloren. Geschlagen, hatte er die traurige Pflicht, die sterblichen Überreste seiner adligen Freunde zurück in ihre Heimat zu bringen. Auf ihrem Heimweg trafen David und Pater Christian, sein Mentor und Beichtvater von Hohenklingen, auf Sklavenhändler, welche drei Dörfer in der Leventina überfallen hatten. Dabei hatten diese die Frauen und Kinder auf bestialische Weise missbraucht und verschleppt. Wie durch ein Wunder gelang es David mit dem behinderten Waffenmeister, Wolf von Waldeck, der seinen Schwertarm auf dem Schlachtfeld verloren hatte, die Sklavenhändler zu besiegen und damit die Opfer zu befreien. David, der bis anhin nicht wusste, was er in Zukunft machen sollte, erkannte jetzt seine wahre Bestimmung. Zurück in Stein am Rhein begann er Söldner als Bogenschützen auszubilden. Diese bekämpften dann die vielen Strassenbanden und Raubritter, die überall im Land ihr Unwesen trieben. Von der Ostsee bis zur Adria, von der Oder bis zum Niederrhein fegten Davids Patrouillen das Ungeziefer von den Strassen und machten damit die kaiserlichen Strassen wesentlich sicherer. Einer dieser Söldner war der Feldwebel Grosshans. Er war ein Riese mit Bärenkräften und bald entwickelte sich zwischen ihm und David eine tiefe Freundschaft. Zusammen beschützten sie ihren Baron von Hohenklingen, der als Berater und Freund des Kaisers immer wieder zu den Hoftagen, die überall im Land stattfanden, reisen musste. Der Baron war auch Mitglied der Verhandlungsdelegation, welche 1177 den Friedensvertrag zwischen dem Kaiser und dem Papst in Venedig aushandelten. Als David, der seine grosse L

Edgar Brändli ist verheiratet und wohnt mit seiner Frau und seinem erwachsenen Sohn in Wilchingen, einem idyllischem Weindorf mitten im Blauburgunderland des Kantons Schaffhausen.
