About the Book

No matter what, continues to travel. But after having a kidney transplant, Hattie had to visit Dr. Biggs more than what she wanted. One day at school something happened. Hattie began having some unusual pain. Did Hattie have a bad cold, the flu or has her kidney stopped working? This activity manual is focused on events in the titled book Hattie's Journey: The Courage to Keep Going, by Dr. Felicia Willians-McGowan. This manual would be good to use with individual students, groups, families, and friends. These activities will provide opportunities to recall information, extend thinking of story ideas, to apply what has been learned, and for individuals to make connections with their own lives through the story.
About the Author: Dr. Felicia Arnetta Williams McGowan has been a school counselor in the elementary schools for over 10 years. She also has 5 years' experience with families in the Social Services arena. While in education Williams McGowan has conducted workshops during school convocation, with faculty and staff, and parents. She has also participated in an alumni panel at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte NC. Which a discussion took place on the do's and don'ts of graduating with a school counselor degree. Williams-McGowan has written grants to help assist with programs at her school. Different programs that have been implemented are the Watch DOGS (Dads of Great Students) program, field trips to local colleges, and after school clubs for girls. She has completed programs through South Carolina State Department of Education and her local school district to help her be a better leader in her current role at the school level. Dr. Felicia Arnetta Williams McGowan was diagnosed with Kidney disease over 32 years which did not stop her from achieving educationally. She has completed undergraduate work at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC. Graduate work was completed at Webster University in Mental Health Counseling in Greenville SC, and she received add-on certification in School Counseling from UNC Charlotte. Finally, a doctoral degree in educational leadership from University of Phoenix was completed in 2013. A reason Williams McGowan authored her book Hattie's Journey is that she has a passion to bring awareness about kidney disease/transplantation and how it affects children. Her experiences as a child led her to have a different childhood but, she created an environment for herself to make sure her childhood was as normal as possible. Dr. Williams McGowan and her mother has spoken at a local school during a Health Fair about McGowan's experience with kidney disease and receiving a kidney from her mother. Even though the illness was difficult at certain times with family support and Williams McGowan own persistence helped her to make it through the process. She is a native of Greenwood S.C. and resides in Rock Hill S.C. She is a wife, member of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, and participates in community service with the sorority and her church family.
