Ganz selbstverständlich sind wir von ihnen umgeben, ihren Einfluss auf uns nehmen wir zunehmend weniger bewusst wahr. Ganz besonders trifft dies auf Kinder und Jugendliche zu. Auch für sie ist eine Vielzahl an Medien fast überall und jederzeit nahezu uneingeschränkt verfüg- und nutzbar. Bereits von frühester Kindheit an werden sie in verschiedener Art und Weise und an unterschiedlichen Orten mit Medien konfrontiert, sind ihrerseits wichtige Zielgruppe für den Medien- und Werbemarkt und nahezu ständig von Medien umgeben (vgl. Six; Gimmler 2010, S. 26). Mit zunehmendem Alter erweitert sich auch das Medienrepertoire der Heranwachsenden und sie wenden sich den unterschiedlichen Angeboten je nach ihren individuellen Interessen und Bedürfnissen zu. Dies geschieht jedoch praktisch nebenbei. Die Allgegenwertigkeit von Medien ist für Kinder und Jugendliche ganz selbstverständlich, und ebenso selbstverständlich lernen sie mit ihnen umzugehen und sich diese zunutze zu machen - sei es um sich zu unterhalten, zu informieren oder zu orientieren. Angesichts dieser Entwicklungen stellt sich jedoch die Frage, welche angemessene Bedeutung in dieser Situation die Medienpädagogik noch inne hat? Wenn Kinder und Jugendliche bereits ganz selbstverständlich mit Medien aufwachsen und zumeist erfahrener als viele Erwachsenen im Umgang mit ihnen sind, ist es überhaupt notwendig und sinnvoll, medienpädagogisch auf die Heranwachsenden einzuwirken? Bedeutet das Aufwachsen der Kinder im digitalen Zeitalter also gewissermaßen ein Abdanken der Medienpädagogik in den Ruhestand?
