About the Book

English summary: This anthology presents the proceedings of the most recent Interdisciplinary Colloquium for Classical Studies at the University of Basel, a form of event that combined the elements of a research colloquium with a student lecture-course in which students, junior researchers, and established scholars from the Classical Studies Society of Basel as well as international presenters all participated in an interdisciplinary discussion. The theme of the 2009 colloquium was "Trade as a Medium of Cultural Contact," which connected two different subject areas: the claims inherent in interdisciplinary work and the importance of various fields to the interdisciplinary nature of classical studies. The goal of the meeting was for members of the Classical Studies Society of Basel to discuss the theme and to sound out its potential with regard to research and teaching. For this volume, specific presentations were selected which either contributed to the theoretical perspectives on the theme, offered case studies for material lines of material evidence of trade within the context of cultural contact, or discussed primary sources that reflected this theme in antiquity. For this anthology Celine Wawruschka discusses the mechanisms of exchange from the theoretical-archaeological perspective, Rainer Nutz considers trade in Egypt during the Middle Kingdom, Faried Adrom discusses Egypt and Crete in the late Minoan era, Rania Kirreh investigates the Phoenician trading network as exemplified in ceramic finds, Lucja Zieba analyzes businessmen in Homer, and Beatrice Wyss discusses the trade connections between the Mediterranean world and India in the context of Philo's criticism of excess. These articles are complimented by a synthetic article, in which the editor (Melanie Wasmuth with student contributions) reflects on the discussions from the colloquium and the student follow-up and unites the central aspects of the meeting in a synoptic fashion.
