About the Book

Neuroleadership is a new field of study drawing on the latest brain research to improve the quality of leadership and leadership development. The field is based on the neuroscience of four leadership activities: how leaders make decisions and solve problems, regulate their emotions, collaborate with others and facilitate change. These four domains provide a foundation for both research and education. The field emerged out of an international summit in Asolo, Italy in 2007 and since then has continued to develop across annual Summits around the globe and with the publication of a peer reviewed journal, along with academic education and hundreds of student-led research projects. This edited volume publishes original empirical studies as reviews of the literature in order to give the reader easy access to the state of the art in NeuroLeadership. It brings together some of the most important research published to date, drawing from the most influential papers published in all the NeuroLeadership Journals between 2008 and 2013. This volume holds contributions of 52 authors from 5 countries, representing some of the major neuroscience laboratories around the world, including Columbia, Notre Dame, NYU and UCLA. Topics include research on staying cool under pressure, the brain's braking system, the SCARF model, the neuroscience of engagement, the Healthy Mind Platter and many others. There are also key discussion papers about the development of the field as well as several early case studies on using neuroscience to improve leadership. Designed for executives, organizational development, talent management, human resources and learning professionals, as well as educators and students, this volume is a valuable resource for getting up to speed on the core research in the field to date, and as a starting point for future research and development.
About the Author: Dr. David Rock coined the term 'NeuroLeadership' and is the director of the NeuroLeadership Institute, a global initiative bringing neuroscientists and leadership experts together to build a new science for leadership development. He co-edits the NeuroLeadership Journal and heads up an annual global summit. He has written many of the central academic and discussion papers defining the NeuroLeadership Field. David is a business best-selling author of 4 books, including his latest, 'Your Brain at Work'. He blogs for the Harvard Business Review, Fortune Magazine, PsychologyToday and The Huffington Post, and is quoted widely in the media about leadership, organizational effectiveness, and the brain. David is also the founder and CEO of NeuroLeadership Group, a global consulting firm with operations in 24 countries, helping large organizations operationalize brain research to develop better leaders and managers. Academically, David is on the faculty and advisory board of CIMBA, an international business school based in Europe, and a guest lecturer at many universities including Oxford University's Said Business School. He received his professional doctorate in the Neuroscience of Leadership from Middlesex University in 2010. Dr. Al H. Ringleb is the founder and Executive Director of the Consortium Institute of Management and Business Analysis (CIMBA), an organization of 40+ major U.S. universities. Through the University of Iowa, CIMBA has developed an international MBA and undergraduate programs in Europe. He received his Ph.D. in economics and his Jurist Doctorate (law degree) from the University of Kansas. Prior to returning to the University of Iowa in Fall 2008, he was a professor at Texas A&M, Clemson, and Kansas. His primary research interests are in the areas of leadership development, focused on applications based on neuroscience and social psychology. With David Rock, he is the co-founder of both the NeuroLeadership Institute and Journal. He has published in leading business management, economic, and legal journals, including: Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Political Economy, and Journal of Legal Studies. Located in Asolo, Italy, CIMBA focuses on leadership development. In combination with Kepner-Tregoe and the Neuroleadership Group, CIMBA has created the NeuroLeadership Labs, which offers a cutting edge, neuroscience-based, data-driven leadership development system. CIMBA hosted the first NeuroLeadership Summit in Asolo in 2007.
