an d'Islande est le premier roman de Victor Hugo, le premier du moins qu'il ait publié en librairie, car en réalité son premier essai fut Bug-Jargal, qui parut dans le Conservateur littéraire en 1820 et qui devait être entièrement transformé en 1826.Victor Hugo avait dix-huit ans quand il écrivit Han d'Islande, et, à trente et un ans, il jugeait, dans la préface de sa troisième édition, son oeuvre et le jeune homme qu'il était autrefois. Il accordait qu'en 1820, il avait de l'imagination, mais aucune expérience des hommes, des choses et des idées. Très sévère pour son roman, il fournissait lui-même des armes à la critique en le qualifiant ainsi: action saccadée, personnages tout d'une pièce, gaucheries sauvages, allure maladroite, candides accès de rêverie. En revanche, lui qui, dans sa première préface, avait reconnu toute l'insignifiance et toute la frivolité du genre à propos duquel il avait si gravement noirci tant de papier, il n'était plus si méprisant pour le genre, mais il avait découvert ce qui manquait dans son premier essai; il aurait fallu qu'il y eût beaucoup de choses senties, observées, devinées; or il n'y avait pour lui qu'une seule chose sentie: l'amour d'un jeune homme, qu'une seule chose observée: l'amour de la jeune fille. Ce n'était pas suffisant, à son avis, pour faire un bon roman. Mais c'était plus qu'il n'en fallait pour justifier, à ses yeux, celui qu'il écrivait puisqu'il y contait, chapitre par chapitre, son propre roman d'amour avec Adèle Foucher. Et voilà pourquoi, étant très amoureux, il avait noirci tant de papier.Mais qu'en a-t-il fait de ce papier noirci ? Nous l'ignorons. Nous n'avons pas retrouvé son manuscrit. Il n'est pas à la Bibliothèque nationale, et, lors de la mort de Paul Meurice, lorsque l'inventaire des papiers de Victor Hugo fut dressé en présence de M. Marcel, administrateur de la Bibliothèque nationale, il fut constaté que le manuscrit de Han d'Islande manquait.On connaît la genèse de ce roman: l'amour de Victor Hugo pour Adèle Foucher. L'aveu de cet amour remontait au 26 avril 1819 et, un an plus tard, après une démarche des Foucher et une conversation avec Mme Hugo, les relations furent rompues. Les amoureux durent cesser de se voir chez leurs parents, mais ils remplacèrent les causeries par des lettres; à des intervalles éloignés ils se rencontraient dans la rue; le 28 avril 1821, Victor espérait même qu'Adèle lui réserverait un entretien tous les quinze jours. À ce moment, Mme Hugo tomba gravement malade; tous les projets de rendez-vous s'évanouirent. Victor ne quittait plus le chevet de sa mère.Or c'est dans le courant du mois de mai, qu'éloigné de celle qu'il aimait, il voulut sinon apaiser, du moins consoler son amour en le racontant.
