So nutzen ca. 60 % der Deutschen über 14 Jahre das Internet. Dies sind 40 Millionen Men-schen. Weltweit nutzen rund 1,2 Mrd. Menschen das Internet. Das Internet besteht aus ca. 3 Mrd. Seiten. Um in dieser Vielzahl von Webseiten fündig zu werden, muss sich der Internetnutzer Suchmaschi-nen bedienen. Seiten, die über Suchmaschinen nicht auffindbar sind, sind im World Wide Web praktisch nicht vorhanden. Auch der BGH hat hierzu vermerkt, dass "ohne die Inanspruchnahme von Suchdiensten die sinnvolle Nutzung der unübersehbaren Informationsfülle des World Wide Web praktisch ausgeschlossen" sei. Diese Tatsache ist für Unternehmen, die im Internet werben, von großer Bedeutung. Der Online-Vermarkterkreis im Bundesverband prognosti-ziert für den Onlinewerbemarkt eine Größenordnung von 2,71 Mrd. Euro für das Jahr 2007. Firmen haben ein reges Interesse daran im Netz "gefunden" zu werden. Hier kommen Suchmaschinen wie Yahoo oder Google ins Spiel. Das Unternehmen Google verdient ca. 2/3 seines Umsatzes mit Werbung. Um die Nutzer von Internetsuchmaschinen auf die Webseiten von Unter-nehmen aufmerksam zu machen, gibt es bei Google zwei Möglichkeiten. Der Nutzer gibt ein Suchwort ein, z.B. "Audi". Es folgen sämtliche Sei-ten die mit "Audi" in Zusammenhang stehen in der Trefferliste. Die zweite Möglichkeit ist, dass Unternehmen Anzeigen schalten können. Dieses Programm nennt sich "Adwords" (Wortspiel auf englisch "Ad-verts" = Werbeanzeigen und "Words" = Worte).
