La Ilustración fue un movimiento renovador del pensamiento humano que se desarrolló en los principales países de Europa lo largo del siglo XVIII y primeros años del siglo XIX. Este movimiento se caracterizó por la búsqueda de la iluminación de la mente por medio de nuevas formas de pensamientos. Se manifestó con extraordinaria fuerza en Francia, Inglaterra y Alemania, donde se mantuvo especialmente activo durante más de un siglo, gracias a la labor de reconocidos intelectuales como Voltaire, Rousseau, Montesquieu, Diderot, Buffon, etc., quienes fundaron lo que sería llamado el Enciclopedismo, el gran impulsor de la Ilustración. El principal objetivo de la Ilustración era acabar con el establecimiento impuesto por las arcaicas y caducas estructuras de los reinados europeos, dirigidos básicamente por la religión y las instituciones eclesiásticas. Mientras el conocimiento es la facultad del ser humano para comprender, por medio de la razón, la naturaleza, las cualidades y relaciones que se establecen entre las cosas, la consciencia es la forma más elevada de conocimiento, una de sus manifestaciones más profundas, más valiosas, y por supuesto, la más difícil de lograr. No todo el mundo logra acceder a ella.Conocerse a sí mismo y encontrar la paz interior, son hechos que están íntimamente interrelacionados. Ambos, son objetivos básicos y esenciales para la realización personal de cualquier ser humano. Si un individuo no usa su razón y su inteligencia para conocerse bien a sí mismo, si no logra ser consciente de sus fortalezas y de sus debilidades, no sabrá cómo manejarlas, y de ningún modo sabrá cómo utilizar las experiencias que le ofrece la naturaleza, para que tales vivencias le resulten positivas y productivas.La inteligencia es la facultad mental que le otorga al ser humano la capacidad de entender y comprender el mundo de una manera integral, de enfrentar sus problemas de una manera más eficaz, desarrollando soluciones distintas y originales y de hacer planes a largo plazo, ya sea para alcanzar los objetivos propuestos o para prevenir futuros problemas. Se puede afirmar que la verdadera inteligencia se manifiesta cuando logramos conseguir la alianza perfecta entre pensar y razonar. La inteligencia es una herramienta hecha para facilitar la supervivencia del individuo.La inteligencia no es una cualidad cuantizada, sino un don continuo y homogéneo, pero que está distribuido en la especie humana en forma irregular, por lo que unos individuos tienen mucha inteligencia, mientras que otros individuos tienen menos, y otros, son aún menos inteligentes. Por consiguiente, convencidos de que existe una relación íntima entre la inteligencia y la consciencia, creemos que lo mismo que sucede con la distribución de la inteligencia, sucede también con la capacidad de ser consciente. La consciencia es ese estado de la mente que nos permite darnos cuenta de nuestra propia existencia, de la del resto del mundo y de las cosas que ocurren en la realidad. Dado que hasta la fecha no se conoce mucho acerca de la consciencia, y para no complicarnos la vida, aceptemos que está relacionada íntimamente con el cerebro humano.
