La empresa íntegra surge por un doble motivo. Por un lado, todos somos conscientes de que estamos inmersos en la crisis más grave desde la de 1929. Pero esta crisis no nace de la nada ni es, sólo, consecuencia del carácter necesariamente cíclico del sistema. Por el contrario, es el resultado de una determinada forma de concebir la economía que emerge en el contexto de la guerra fría y alcanza un estatus de total predominancia desde finales de la década de los ochenta. Desde entonces, y como consecuencia del triunfo de dicha concepción económica, hemos asistido a una larga serie de crisis (crisis latinoamericana, crisis asiática, hundimiento de empresas como Enron, Worldcom, Parmalat, etc., explosión de burbujas especulativas como las de las puntocom o la del mercado inmobiliario, crisis de las deudas soberanas ....) que comparten un mismo binomio: comportamientos guiados por la desmesura, la codicia y el egoísmo, y consecuencias de los mismos que terminan recayendo sobre los más vulnerables y menos culpables. Por tanto, el primer motivo responde a la necesidad de desenmascarar las causas raíz de esta crisis, para contribuir a evitar que sigan dando nuevos brotes y provocando más sufrimiento innecesario, y para defender y justificar que otro tipo de empresa, contrapuesto al que surge de la deriva del pensamiento económico triunfante, es posible. El segundo motivo es de índole personal. Desde los años noventa el autor ha trabajado como académico y como consultor en el ámbito de la sostenibilidad y de la responsabilidad empresarial. En este sentido, ha sido testigo, y en parte promotor, de cómo numerosas empresas líderes se disfrazaban con el hábito de la responsabilidad mientras seguían operando guiadas por el pensamiento económico dominante. La manifiesta insuficiencia del movimiento de la responsabilidad empresarial, y el hecho de que dicha insuficiencia responde a la falta de un análisis profundo de las causas de los comportamientos empresariales irresponsables, es el otro motor que ha empujado al autor a escribir esta obra.La empresa íntegra no es un manual empresarial lleno de ejemplos y recetas, sino una contribución al esfuerzo de reflexión necesario y urgente sobre por qué los mundos económico y empresarial son como son en la actualidad y sobre cómo podrían ser. La primera parte de la obra plantea tres preguntas básicas para entender la situación en que nos encontramos: ¿es real la realidad?, ¿qué es el ser humano? y ¿qué es el éxito? La concepción de nuestra relación con la realidad, del ser humano y del éxito influye decisivamente en los comportamientos de las empresas, de las personas y de la sociedad en su conjunto. Tras explicar las causas por las que el pensamiento económico dominante está basado en una concepción lineal de la realidad, una visión del ser humano profundamente negativa y una idea del éxito circunscrita al dinero, se presentan y justifican concepciones alternativas a las mismas, y se explican las implicaciones de unas y otras. Tomando como base esta reflexión, la segunda parte del libro está dedicada a concretar las implicaciones empresariales de lo expuesto en los capítulos precedentes y a delinear los trazos principales de la empresa íntegra. Se proponen las tres dualidades fundamentales (temporal, espacial y actitudinal) que ha de afrontar toda empresa y el diferente impacto que tienen las concepciones dominante y alternativa de la tríada realidad-ser humano-éxito: mientras la primera lleva a una gestión alicorta y empobrecedora de dichas dualidades, la segunda alienta la creatividad y ayuda a trascender la aparente oposición de sus respectivos polos.
