2005. Daniel Doneski es un periodista americano que lleva treinta años viviendo en España y tiene la necesidad imperiosa de escribir una novela con personajes llenos de verdad. Cree poder encontrarla en tierra Santa, en Jerusalén, donde las tres religiones monoteístas más importantes se mezclan en una infinidad de matices. Daniel, siendo ateo, piensa que los fieles que visitan a diario la ciudad sagrada pueden darle el retrato justo que necesita para su narración.
Tiene dos amigos en Madrid que gerencian una librería, HaBrit, sucursal de otra situada en el centro de Jerusalén, a los que visita de manera asidua para que le cuenten cómo es el devenir de su tierra. Daniel es padre de Adriana, médico dedicada, a través de una ONG, a salvar niñas de los peligros que sociedades diezmadas por el odio y la barbarie infieren a diario a esas pobres criaturas. Es padre también de Carlos, que vive junto a su madre en Barcelona.
Al llegar a Jerusalén, Daniel se encuentra con las dos familias que regentan la central de la librería HaBrit, y estos le enseñan cómo se puede vivir sin odios ni rencores siendo cada familia de una religión distinta, palestinos e israelíes. No encuentra signos de la verdad que busca entre los fieles de los santos lugares, pero sí encuentra el amor en Zuleyma, hija de uno de los dueños de la librería.
Gamal (palestino) y Leví (judío), los pioneros que inauguraron la librería en 1950, fueron como hermanos desde pequeños, luchando juntos en la segunda guerra mundial, e incluso estuvieron presos en un campo de concentración en Italia. En esa librería guardan, a la vista de todos, un objeto sagrado por el que cualquiera pagaría millones, que encontraron siendo niños mientras jugaban a futbol.
Eitan, uno de los hijos de Benor, hijo de Leví y cogerente actual de HaBrit junto a Hassán, hijo de Gamal, se ve involucrado en un atentado y la noticia hace que Halima Saidi, intermediaria sin escrúpulos de todo aquello que pueda enriquecerla, junto a Gustav Müller, se interesen para conseguir el objeto sagrado, sin importarles la manera de hacerlo, puesto que son expertos traficantes de arte y objetos robados, con clientes en todo el mundo. Gustav conoció la historia del objeto sagrado, por primera vez, en 1979 por boca de Joseph Oberhauser, comandante del campo de exterminio donde estuvieron Gamal y Leví.
Halima, a la que llaman "la jequesa", es íntima amiga de la primera dama de Túnez y le promete el objeto sagrado en cuanto lo tenga. A Halima también le gusta el arte de procurarse todo placer, por muy prohibido que sea. Por eso mantiene a una adolescente africana desde los trece años, que le sirve de criada y de más cosas. Y como la niña ya tiene diecisiete años, se procura en adopción a otra niña de quince, Nasha, recién salvada de las garras del infierno por Adriana, la hija de Daniel Doneski.
Tras planear el secuestro de Jaia, que codirige la librería de Madrid junto a su hermano David, y gracias a la ayuda de un diplomático israelí patoso y gafe, se equivocan y secuestran a Adriana, la hija de Daniel Doneski. El objeto llega por fin a manos de Halima y se la entrega a Lamia, la primera dama de Túnez, pero un tumulto de personas enfervorizadas asesina a esta. Halima recoge de nuevo la tabla, ya pagada, y la vende por segunda vez a un cliente de Gustav. Pero este coleccionista de arte, que tiene conciencia y escrúpulos, realiza una acción que nadie espera.
La verdad ansiada por Doneski es hallada entre las personas que comparten la única vida que tienen gracias al honor y al cariño, a la comprensión y al altruismo, que deciden entregar un objeto único, sin pensarlo dos veces, para salvar la vida de Adriana, y a su vez de Nasha.
La acción se desarrolla en Madrid, Jerusalén, Túnez, Djerba (Túnez), Aix en Provence (Francia), Munich, Trieste, Nueva York, y en algunas localidades más, narrando en un capítulo el robo del arca de la Alianza, en
