La novela está basada en hechos reales y enmarcada en el estilo literario de un relato histórico novelado. La historia relatada es verídica y la mayoría de sus protagonistas son reales. La Novela subyace en el retrato de una mujer parda que, por su singular personalidad, tuvo incidencia en sucesos importantes de la época colonial y posteriormente durante el proceso independentista. Su protagonista, María Remedios del Valle, quedó en la historia como "La Madre de la Patria". Además de la desigualdad étnica se sumaba la adquirida por ser mujer, situación que no estaba decidida a obedecer. Fue madre, hermana, hija y esposa, pero sobre todo, una guerrera. Nació en Buenos Aires a mediados del siglo XVIII, participó en la defensa de Buenos Aires en las invasiones inglesas y acompañada de su marido e hijos, formó parte del Ejército Auxiliar del Alto Perú primero y del Norte luego, siendo protagonista de una triste historia de injusticia y olvido. En el Alto Perú, el sistema de mujeres cuarteleras estaba tan bien diagramado que incluso tenían el nombre de "rabonas" y en algunas unidades su número llegó a ser superior al de los soldados. Las mujeres siempre fueron asociadas a los sentimientos, a la bondad, a cuidar, al perfil bajo y a la delicadeza. Bajo estos estereotipos, se entiende porqué fue tan difícil imaginar damas luchando en una guerra. La participación de la mayoría de las mujeres durante las guerras, se limitó a la alimentación de los soldados, remendar uniformes y cuidar las heridas de quienes habían caído en batalla. Pero la experiencia de Remedios y el cómo las mujeres se comportan en algunas situaciones, demuestra que sus habilidades fueron subestimadas. Cuando la situación lo amerita pueden ser tan estratégicas, crudas y brutales como lo es cualquier hombre. El problema es que cuando así se comportan, se les otorgan calificativos de machona, loca, histérica, resentida y un tristísimo etc.. De esto trata la novela. Volver visible a una "negra" a una "mujer". Que lo diera todo por su patria y por sus sueños. Concluida la guerra, con mucha pena y sin ninguna gloria, regresó. La indiferencia la recibió en la ciudad de Buenos Aires. Pasó un largo tiempo golpeando puertas y escribiendo misivas a quienes habían sido sus pares en el campo de batalla sin obtener respuesta. Sumida en la indigencia, se refugia en una casona derruida de las afueras, hasta que el hambre y el desamparo la conducen a mendigar en las iglesias, en el puerto o en la Plaza de la Victoria; llegando incluso a recurrir a las sobras que le tiran a los perros, para poder alimentarse. ¿Cómo había terminado así?-se preguntaba cada día. Cada noche se acostaba en una cama que no era suya y que olía a miseria, un horrible hedor a miseria y a olvido.
