About the Author: Mario Riva Morales nasceu em Havana em 24 de setembro de 1950 em uma família de classe média. Seu pai, como muitos de seus ascendentes, pelo mesmo caminho pertencia ao serviço estrangeiro de seu país desde o começo da República. Como qualquer cubano de sua geração, ele sentiu as "costelas do Rocinante" em seus calcanhares e pegou em armas com novas canções de guerra e vitórias. Seu estágio de adolescente não diferiu do resto da juventude cubana após o triunfo revolucionário do ano de 1959. Esportista, cederista, jovem comunista. Viajo com seus pais conhecendo países como Inglaterra, Bélgica, Holanda e Espanha. Mais tarde, sendo oficial e piloto de aviação, ele visitou a Tchecoslováquia e a União Soviética. Como piloto de helicóptero, ele participou de três missões internacionalistas. Como soldado obteve o posto de tenente-coronel e recebeu, em reconhecimento de seus méritos pessoais, mais de dez condecorações, concedidas pelo Conselho de Estado da República de Cuba. Ele obteve o título de "Master of Arts" em Ciências Militares, depois de se formar como oficial de comando na Academia Superior de Aviação "Yuri Gagarin" na União Soviética, em 1983. Ele se aposentou do serviço militar ativo no mês de junho de 1992, sendo Inspetor de Aviação de Helicóptero na Seção da Força Aérea do Estado Maior da Defesa Antiaérea das Forças Armadas Revolucionárias (DAAFAR).
