Nel 1860 iniziò nel Mezzogiorno d'Italia una guerra civile, dimenticata e nascosta dalla Storia. Si è combattuta tra Nord e Sud, come in America, come lì per interessi economici e sulla pelle della povera gente. È stata una guerra politica, combattuta per procura dalle potenze europee attraverso i Savoia per accaparrarsi le risorse dell'Italia, sfruttando l'idealismo unitario e la credulità popolare contadina.

Le avanguardie garibaldine con la Spedizione dei Mille diedero inizio al conflitto; dallo sbarco di Garibaldi a Marsala e il successivo in Calabria passarono più di tre mesi. Città dopo città Trapani, Palermo, Catania, Messina caddero. Nei grossi centri la popolazione civile si mantenne fuori dai combattimenti, ma nell'entroterra come a Bronte nel catanese molti contadini, coppola in testa, che avevano equivocato la venuta dei Mille con un'insurrezione contro il potere, si ribellarono. Vennero appiccate le fiamme a decine di case dei ricchi, al teatro e all'archivio comunale. Sedici furono i morti fra nobili, ufficiali, il barone del posto. A Nino Bixio, luogotenente di Garibaldi il compito di ripristinare l'ordine con processi sommari e fucilazioni. Iniziava quello che negli anni successivi sarà una costante per il controllo del territorio in tutto il Mezzogiorno: la repressione col sangue. La capitale Napoli cadde in mano ai garibaldini senza alcuna resistenza, ma la minaccia della costituzione di una Repubblica era reale perché il repubblicano Giuseppe Mazzini poteva influenzare Garibaldi. Così l'esercito dei Savoia si affrettò a occupare i territori del Papa e si unì nei pressi di Teano in provincia di Caserta con la truppa garibaldina. Il riconoscimento internazionale al nuovo Regno arrivò ben presto, ma il nuovo regime militare non riuscì a controllare le periferie, le campagne dove si stabilì la guerriglia. Chi si opponeva veniva additato a brigante ed eliminato, si fece di tutta un'erba un fascio, a farne le spese anche poveri contadini. Il quadro che si presentava davanti a un ipotetico cronista dell'epoca era questo: teste mozzate sanguinolenti, ingabbiate nel vetro e penzolanti dagli alberi, fucilazioni di massa, malattie, paesi distrutti, saccheggiati e dati alle fiamme. Negli anni successivi lo stesso Garibaldi si rese conto dell'errore, tentò una nuova spedizione, ma fu bloccato dall'esercito in Aspromonte, ferito e costretto a ritirarsi. La famosa canzoncina Garibaldi fu ferito, fu ferito ad una gamba... è rimasta per lungo tempo popolare. Mazzini, ritenuto l'ispiratore dell'iniziativa fu esiliato. La guerra d'occupazione continuo' e terminò solo nel 1869 quando vennero stanate, bruciando ettari e ettari di bosco le ultime bande di cavalleria dei guerriglieri (da quel momento per sempre briganti) che si erano nascosti sulle sommità delle montagne.
