La guerra civil española ha tenido un gran impacto en la imaginería histórica. Sin lugar a dudas, el conflicto marcó un hito en el siglo XX, como precursor de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, y como una muestra del auge de los movimientos extremistas en la década del 30, pero tuvo también su propia y compleja narrativa, aun cuando se vio como un auténtico conflicto internacional. Marcó uno de los momentos clave, junto al derrumbe de Wall Street en 1929, entre las dos guerras apocalípticas de la primera mitad del siglo XX, y al haber transcurrido entre 1936 y 1939, España resultó un terreno de pruebas para las tácticas, armamento e ideología poco antes de la Segunda Guerra Mundial.
Para las potencias aliadas Inglaterra y Francia, España se convirtió en una contemporización incómoda, sin embargo, como el nombre sugiere, el conflicto tuvo características netamente españolas. Las presiones que llevaron a la guerra, sus desafíos sociales, su larga e intrincada historia, y el conflicto mismo entre dos bandos que incluían elementos tan dispares como el clero, los socialistas, los terratenientes, e incluso los anarquistas.
