About the Book

English summary: More than fifty scholars of the first rank from around the world have contributed to this anthology, which completes the series "The Philosophy of Antiquity." The contributions offer a fascinating overview of pagan, Jewish, and early Christian philosophical heritages of the first millennium after Christ, covering not only the traditional "west" and Byzantium but also the Islamic intellectual tradition as well. With detailed and extensive presentations, which reflect the current edge in intellectual research, this work aims to view the philosophy of the Roman Empire and Late Antiquity from a broad perspective that includes not only the late classical condition of science and scholarship but also theology, philosophy, Jewish and Islamic studies as well as more general views of the humanities. The themes for this anthology coalesce around the belief that pagan and Judeo-Christian philosophy were not two mutually exclusive worldviews that were consistently antagonistic towards, and isolated from, each other but rather that there was considerable areas where there was a lively exchange and engagement between them. Accordingly, the structure of the book is shaped by the principle of interaction, in which the chronological organization plays a central role, but also the teacher-student paradigm, the institutional affiliation of an author and, in a secondary way, their religious affiliations and geographic locations, all of which were taken into consideration. The result is a surprising interdependence among the authors which is comprehensively presented and clearly articulated. This fascinating epoch, which continues to have considerable influence into our own time, is approached from a variety of perspectives and rendered in an easy to understand style.
