Excerpt from Grundriss der Religionsphilosophie

Der dem Leben und der Wissenschaft so fruhzeitig ent1issene Verfasser hatte beabsichtigt seiner Geschichte der christlichen Religionsphilosophie eine Schlussabhandlung folgen zu lassen, welche im Unterschiede von der streng objectiven, jede Beurtheilung aus schliessenden Darstellung der beiden, 1880 und 1883 im Druck erschienenen Bande, seine eigene Stellung zu den religionsphilo sophischen Problemen bezeichnen sollte: Es ist ihm nicht mehr vergonnt gewesen diesen Vorsatz auszufuhren. Der Plan hatte sich ihm allmahli ch erweitert; aus einem kritischen Ruckblicke auf die dargestellten Systeme erwuchs allmahlich eine selbstandige Ausfuhrung. Wahrend er es in der Vorrede zum ersten Bande noch aussprechen musste, dass er zur Zeit ein abgeschlossenes religious philosophisches System noch nicht besasse, hatte sich im Laufe der Zeit sein Standpunkt abgeklart und befestigt. So fasste er den Ent schluss, den beiden Banden seines Werkes als dritten abschliessen den Band ein selbstandiges System der Religionsphilosophie hinzu zufugen. Als Prolegomena zu diesem Systeme schrieb er bereits im Jahre 1882 eine Abhandlung uber "theologie und Metaphysik Dieselbe blieb jedoch unvollendet und kam uber eine kritische Auseinandersetzung, einerseits mit dem Unterzeichneten, andrerseits mit der Ritschl'schen Schule, nicht hinaus. Die Eingangswortesprechen die Ueberzeugung aus, dass von den drei grossen Problemen der Religionsphilosophie dem psychologischen dem historischen und dem metaphysischen, grade das letztere der principiellen Losung am Nachsten sei. In der Ausfuhrung schliesst sich der Verfasser ziemlich eng an Biedermann an. Fortgesetztes Nachdenken fuhrte ihn weiter und liess ihn gegen Ende seines Lebens zu einer Mittel stellung zwischen Biedermann und dem Unterzeichneten gelangen. Inzwischen reifte gefordert durch die wiederholt uber Religions philosophie gehaltenen Vorlesungen die fur den Druck bestimmte Darstellung der Vollendung entgegen. Das System der Religions philosophie sollte den Stoff in Form eines kurzen, aber durch An merkungen erlauterten und erweiterten Grundrisses enthalten. Der Entwurf dieses Grundrisses fand sich im Nachlasse Pu n j er's in zwei verschiedenen Fassungen vor. Leider war diejenige, welcher er zuletzt den Vorzug gab, im Texte nicht vollendet. Der Verfasser beabsichtigte, den Paragraphen, welcher die Definition der Religion enthalt, ans Ende zu stellen. Der Schluss sollte das "allgemeine Verhaltniss des religiosen zum wissenschaftlichen Erkennen er ortern und dann als "resultat die "definition der Religion, sowie einen "ruckblick auf die ganze vergangene Darstellung bringen. Dieser Vorsatz ist unausgefuhrt geblieben. Um daher keinen Torso der Oefl'entlichkeit zu ubergeben hat der Unter zeichnete es vorgezogen, die Definition der Religion an ihrer alten Stelle (5 34) zu belassen und die Darstellung mit dem Nachweise der wesentlichen Uebereinstimmung der religiosen und der meta physischen Erkenntniss zu schliessen. Der letzte Paragraph dieses Abschnittes 42) war im Manuscripte unvollendet. Es ist aber gelungen, denselben mit Hulfe einer kurzen Ausfuhrung zu erganzen, welche sich von spaterer Hand am Rande einer Darstellung aus dem Jahre 1882 vorfand, und offenbar zur Grundlage des dem Druck zu ubergebenden Textes bestimmt war. Mit Abrechnung einiger weniger lediglich stilistischer Aenderungen ist auch der Schluss paragraph ganz und voll des Verewigten literarisches Eigenthum.
