Gleichzeitig vergrößerte sich das Angebot öffentlicher und privater Universitäten und damit auch das Studiengangangebot. Durch dieses Überangebot gelingt es nicht jedem Studieninteressenten, den Überblick zu behalten. Das Studienbeginnalter verringert sich seit Jahren. Im Jahr 2000 lag der Anteil von Studienbeginnern, die 21 Jahre oder jünger waren, bei 65,2 % - 2006 waren es bereits 68,9%. Gerade jüngere Menschen fühlen sich durch das immense Angebot oft überfordert. Auch Zukunftsperspektiven, die durch den Studienabschluss gewonnen werden, spielen hierbei eine große Rolle. Umso wichtiger ist es, durch StudienberaterInnen in Gesprächen herauszufinden, welche Studienrichtungen mit den Neigungen, Voraussetzungen und Zukunftsplänen der Studieninteressenten kompatibel sind. Laut Just-Nietfeld und Nickels besteht die Studienberatung zu ungefähr 61% aus Studieninteressierten, die in ein oder mehreren Beratungsgesprächen nähere Informationen zu ihrer akademischen Laufbahn in Erfahrung bringen möchten.
