This review from my friend Oscar gives what I believe to be a concise explanation of what I have attempted with this series.

With GREYWOLF, George Arfaras has written something special: a novel whose main character's journey is reminiscent of Mowgli in Rudyard Kipling's JUNGLE BOOK and Greystoke in Edgar Rice Burroughs' TARZAN OF THE APES. Mowgli and Tarzan are indebted to animals who help them survive their formative years, and fate challenges all three main characters, including Greyson (ie, Greywolf) to weather one adventure after another.

GREYWOLF will entertain most readers from start to finish because of its richness. It's part coming of age story, part love story, part nature tale, and even part science lesson. Rising above all other themes running through the novel is the regard for and power of family and friends in our lives. Often, the latter become the former. We come to love some friends as we do blood kin. Such is the case here. Blood family is important in this book, especially at the start of the story, but so are the animal and human friends who nurture Greywolf along the life road.

The novel begins with a harrowing accident that separates the title character - then only an infant - from his family. Luckily, and improbably, he is rescued by wolves who help raise him. In time, as the boy grows, he is taken in by a Blackfoot couple who continue to raise him. As time passes, Greywolf's blood family never forgets him and continues to search for the little boy they can't believe died.

Then comes a harrowing incident that rocks Greywolf and compromises his freedom. I won't reveal all here because to do so would be to undercut the thrill ride this book becomes from the first few pages through the last paragraph.

I met George Arfaras when GREYWOLF was little more than a kernel in his head. He didn't know exactly how to birth it. I told him, "Just start writing. Write a little of it every day. Eventually, the pages - either real or virtual - pile up. The story moves along. It grabs you. It demands that you keep going. You do. And one day, you realize it's finished."

I'm so glad my friend finished his novel. It's a well-paced tale with heart. In fact, the only upsetting thing about it is that while there is closure here, there's a strong hint that there is much more to tell about Greywolf.

I'm waiting for the sequel, George.
