About the Book

This book relies on original research on Pope Gregory the Great, and on Leander, evident in Saint Leander, Archbishop of Seville, edited and translated by John Martyn (Lexington Books, New York, 2009). It starts with Gregory's letters, translated into English, to Leander, who became a very close friend. Their childhood years and very similar upbringings are followed by their years together in Constantinople, where Leander played a key role in the greatest of Gregory's works, his Commentary on Job. Their similar literary skills evident in their works are then discussed, and their theological influence, in Italy and Spain, followed by their very similar attitudes to nuns and abbesses, to heresies, schisms and monks, and to Classical Studies and music. The book ends with the overall similarities in their lives and in their deaths, both struck by gout. Gregory and Leander were two extraordinary men, who played a major part in spreading the Christian Church, both of them very much on the side of women.
About the Author: John Martyn, a graduate of Cambridge University, lectured at Melbourne University from 1958 (when he was the youngest lecturer on campus) until 2000, when he at last had time to write books and articles and reviews. Appointed as a Principle Fellow in the School of Historical and Philosophical Studies, he soon published several works, mostly connected with the greatest of all Popes, Gregory the Great. All of his letters were edited and translated into English and were published by the Pontifical Institute of Medieval Studies in Toronto, in 2004. In late 2012, a fascinating manuscript containing three dozen of the Pope's letters was found in the Potter gallery at Melbourne University; the only manuscript of letters or of historical works to have illuminated capital letters. Cambridge Scholars Publishing has also published Martyn's Pope Gregory and the Brides of Christ (2009), Pope Gregory's Special Concern for Women (2011) and Pope Gregory's Letter-Bearers (2012).
