About the Book

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

A trail of infamy stretches through Mexican history; sadly, much it committed by national heroes, caudillos, even the country's so-called "founding fathers."

Throughout Mexico's history to the present day, through the assassination of Colosio and beyond, the struggle to seize and hold onto power at any cost has led to unexpected alliances, unprecedented levels of corruption and brazen killings. Some of these have been downright Machiavellian, including the rumored poisoning of Benito Juárez.

The chain of betrayals extends through the nineteenth century, from Morelos to Santa Anna and Porfirio Díaz, who stamped out Mexican liberalism and, despite winning the presidency by championing the principle of no reelection, clung to power until the outbreak of revolution. The twentieth century continued the trend, with Victoriano Huerta's betrayal of Madero; Carranza's betrayal of Zapata; and Obregón's betrayal of the revolution and its main rallying cry: effective suffrage, no reelection. The latter's treason culminated in his reelection in 1928 and subsequent betrayal of Carranza, Villa, Adolfo de la Huerta and Francisco Serrano, until he met his end at the hands of, among others, Plutarco Elías Calles, his close friend and fellow Sonoran.

Francisco Martín Moreno relies on meticulous archival research to analyze these and other episodes in Mexican history in this accessible and compelling volume, motivated by the conviction that understanding the history of one's country, warts and all, is fundamental to building a healthy society today.
