Grandes pasos de la humanidad hace referencia a todos aquellos apasionantes desarrollos y avances relativos al conocimiento y la comprensión de la Luna en toda su esencia y naturaleza, los cuales se lograron a lo largo de los diferentes períodos históricos y que posibilitaron el viaje hasta allí. Mi propósito fundamental en este texto es que el lector los descubra y asimile. Igualmente, la obra pretende responder la pregunta básica: ¿Cómo es que fue posible?Para lograr tales objetivos, empiezo exponiendo la manera en que las sociedades prehistóricas, con su característica mentalidad mitológica, trataron y comprendieron a nuestra Luna como una diosa. Seguidamente, argumento sobre los orígenes de la filosofía como forma de pensamiento propia de la sociedad griega antigua primero, y grecorromana después, y describo la manera en que nuestro satélite fue estudiado y comprendido en términos racionales, filosóficos. Algo muy diferente a lo que ocurre en las sociedades del período medieval, que estudiaron la astronomía con una mentalidad marcadamente teológica y sobrenaturalista. Paso luego al drástico giro que tiene lugar con la llegada del Renacimiento europeo y el regreso a la forma racional de pensamiento; de este período el astrónomo más notable es Nicolás Copérnico, por haber presentado su teoría heliocéntrica y por haber colocado a la Luna en su lugar correcto en el universo: un satélite de la Tierra, nuestra más fiel y cercana compañera celeste. Seguidamente, para el siglo XVII expongo los orígenes de la ciencia moderna; y muestro como realizaron sus invaluables aportes los astrónomos Johannes Kepler y Galileo Galilei, y el genial físico Isaac Newton, para comprender y describir al globo lunar en términos científicos. Finalmente, explico la consolidación de la Astronomía lunar a partir del período de la Ilustración, que se dio entre los siglos XVIII y XIX, con la participación de un selecto grupo de astrónomos, matemáticos y físicos: la posición y el movimiento del satélite se conocen ya con suficiente precisión como para plantear seriamente un viaje hasta él. Entonces, expongo como todo aquel conocimiento sobre la Luna adquirido en el curso de la historia se combina con los monumentales desarrollos científico-tecnológicos del siglo XX: los motores a base de combustibles líquidos, los poderosos cohetes impulsados con ellos, las sofisticadas naves espaciales y las prodigiosas computadoras que las guían; todo esto para poner decididamente al Hombre rumbo a la Luna. La Carrera espacial, iniciada en 1.957, tiene su momento cúspide el 20 de julio de 1969, cuando la primera nave espacial hecha por el hombre se posa sobre la superficie satelital, y unas siete horas después el astronauta Neil Armstrong, al descender de la nave, pronuncia aquella famosísima frase: "Este es un pequeño paso para un hombre, pero un gran salto para la humanidad". Al finalizar la lectura del texto, yo confío en que el lector empezará a sentir la Luna un poco más cerquita y mucho más familiar.
