Habitan la que llaman Gran Caverna tres razas de humanoides que miden alrededor de un metro treinta centímetros (los Enanos), que son los autores de figuras labradas en roca viva: los laboriosos Resan, los técnicos Forsan y los sabios Glosan. Y en su arroyo interior mora una oruga gigante a la que algunos llaman Gusano...
Es una caverna enorme con frondosos accesos que permiten la entrada de luz solar, la cual ilumina por la mañana el enorme bajo-relieve que se encuentra bajo la hendidura que mira al este, y por la tarde al que está bajo la abertura que da al oeste.
Dos pastores, padre e hijo, entraron un día por la abertura que mira al este. Al día siguiente volvieron a entrar y vieron a los moradores. Comenzaron a enseñarles a hablar, pues sólo se comunicaban mediante pensamientos y gruñidos. Los Enanos contaron a los pastores sus tradiciones, les mostraron su sencilla sabiduría y les explicaron el motivo de sus trabajos en la roca...

"Poco después, Gusano hizo emerger del agua la mitad de su cuerpo. Acababa de comprobar que Baltasar se había ahogado. Creyó que los Enanos y los otros seres habían huido de algún peligro mortal. Intuyó que nunca regresarían y que él moriría si se quedaba. Pero no podía escapar reptando, ni debajo del agua por el tramo subterráneo del arroyo. Lo había intentado por allí otras veces y daba por hecho que se asfixiaría antes de llegar a un sitio donde poder respirar. Además ¿para qué huir? No deseaba vivir, subsistir solo en la oscuridad, comiéndose a otros seres vivos y bebiendo agua del arroyo. Deseó el fin de su vida, que él creía miserable, aunque tuvo una finalidad: eso lo consolaba... mas para él nada tenía ya sentido, sólo la muerte".
