Galileo Galilei fue un astrónomo, matemático, físico y filósofo que propició la revolución científica que tuvo lugar durante el Renacimiento. Sus descubrimientos han hecho que sea considerado el padre de la ciencia, así como el padre de la astronomía y la física modernas.En 1609 recibe una carta de un antiguo alumno donde le informa que en Holanda han fabricado un telescopio que permite ver los objetos lejanos. Con sólo esta información, Galileo fabricará su propio telescopio muy superior al holandés: no deforma los objetos, tiene más aumento y gracias a una lente divergente da la imagen al derecho. Ese mismo año presenta el instrumento al Senado de Venecia en la plaza San Marco, desde donde consigue mostrar la isla de Murano situada a 2,5 km del lugar. Ello le supone obtener el puesto vitalicio en la universidad de Padua y superar sus dificultades financieras. El año siguiente lo dedica a perfeccionar su instrumento y a observar los astros con él. Con ello descubre que la luna no es una esfera perfecta sino que también tiene montañas, desmontando así por fin la teoría aristotélica que dividía el mundo en dos: el sublunar y el supralunar, considerando que ésta era un astro perfecto. En poco tiempo también descubrirá la naturaleza de la Vía Láctea, la constelación de Orión, los cúmulos de estrellas, y estudiará los anillos de Saturno, las fases de Venus y las manchas solares. En 1610 hace otro descubrimiento importante: los cuatro satélites de Júpiter que giran a su alrededor. Hoy en día se conocen como satélites galileanos en su honor. Él pensaba en Júpiter y sus satélites como un modelo del sistema solar. Con ello quería demostrar que Aristóteles estaba equivocado de nuevo y que no todos los astros giraban alrededor de la Tierra. Esto fue un duro golpe para el geocentrismo. Galileo publicará todos sus descubrimientos en este campo en El mensajero de las estrellas (Sidereus Nuncius). La publicación de este libro hará que los partidarios de Aristóteles le declaren la guerra puesto que no quieren ver su ciencia puesta en cuestión. Además, su método basado en la observación y la experimentación era opuesto al de ellos. Galileo rechazará incluso ser comparado con ellos. Ese fue el inicio de la astronomía moderna.Históricamente, la exploración espacial comenzó con el lanzamiento del satélite artificial Sputnik por la URSS el 4 de octubre de 1957, en el Cosmódromo de Baikonur (base de lanzamiento de cohetes de la URSS), en Tyuratam, en Kazajistán. Este acontecimiento provocó una carrera espacial por la conquista del espacio entre la URSS y los Estados Unidos que culminó con la llegada del hombre a la Luna.Esta es la historia de esa gran aventura, hasta 2016...y lo que el futuro nos reserva.
