About the Book

Here, for the first time, is the true, untold story of the 13 survivors of the U.S.S. Sims (DD-409), sunk in action during the Battle of the Coral Sea. First-hand accounts of survivors and never before published letters from crew members and their families reveal a story of courage, hope, friendship and love undaunted by the horrors of war. This riveting work of military history brings readers face-to-face with the human toll of war and takes them deep inside the action, from the "Neutrality Patrols" in the perilous North Atlantic to the battle that gave America its first strategic victory of World War II. Grace Under Fire is Dan Verton's fourth book. Winner of the 2003 Jesse H. Neal National Business Journalism Award, Dan Verton is the author of The Insider: A True Story (Llumina Press, 2005), Black Ice: The Invisible Threat of Cyber-Terrorism (McGraw-Hill, 2003) and The Hacker Diaries: Confessions of Teenage Hackers (McGraw-Hill, 2002).
About the Author: Dan Verton is a veteran technology journalist with 20 years of experience covering the federal government. He's written for the oldest and most influential technology trade magazines in the industry and is the 2003 first place recipient of the Jesse H. Neal National Business Journalism Award for News Reporting - the nation's highest award for tech trade journalism. Dan is a former intelligence officer in the U.S. Marine Corps and has authored several books on cybersecurity, including the 2003 groundbreaking work, Black Ice: The Invisible Threat of Cyber-Terrorism (McGraw-Hill) and The Hacker Diaries: Confessions of Teenage Hackers (McGraw-Hill). He has a Master of Arts in Journalism from American University in Washington, D.C. Dan has appeared regularly on national news and documentary broadcasts, including CNN, Discovery Channel, The History Channel and various national radio broadcasts. In 2007, Dan consulted for the 20th Century Fox blockbuster, Live Free or Die Hard, which saw John McClane (Bruce Willis) and a young hacker join forces to take down master cyber-terrorist Thomas Gabriel in Washington D.C. In 2008, Dan appeared in a special documentary alongside Steve Wozniak, Richard Clarke and legendary hacker Captain Crunch as part of the 25th Anniversary DVD release of the classic movie War Games, starring Matthew Broderick. Dan has addressed the United Nations twice on cyberterrorism and has testified before both the U.S. House and Senate on critical infrastructure protection. Follow him on Twitter @DanielVerton
