About the Book

Caroline Schelling (1763 bis 1809), geborene Michaelis, verwitwete Bohmer und geschiedene Schlegel, hatte ein faszinierendes Leben, in dem sie den Geistesgroßen ihrer Zeit begegnete, allen voran Goethe und Schiller. Aber auch Wilhelm und Alexander von Humboldt, August Wilhelm Schlegel, zeitweise ihr Ehemann, und dessen Bruder Friedrich spielen eine wichtige Rolle wie weiterhin Georg Forster, Ludwig Tieck und Novalis, Clemens und Bettine Brentano, Fichte und Herder.Sie war eine der sogenannten Universitatsmamsellen, Tochter Gottinger Professoren, hochgebildet, auch wenn sie keine Universitat besuchen durften; Caroline sprach Italienisch, Franzosisch und Englisch. Ihre Lebensstationen nach der Kindheit in Gottingen sind Clausthal im Harz mit dem Ehemann Dr. Bohmer, nach dessen Tod Aufenthalt in Marburg bei einem Bruder, weiter nach Mainz, wo sie ein gutes Jahr lebte, die kurzlebige Mainzer Republik miterlebte und mit einem jungen franzosischen Offizier eine Glutnacht verbrachte, die nicht ohne Folgen blieb. Auf ihrer Flucht aus Mainz wurde sie von preußischen Soldaten festgehalten und auf die Festung Konigstein gebracht, wo sie mit ihrer Tochter Auguste drei Monate in Geiselhaft genommen wurde. Ihr Bruder und August Wilhelm Schlegel setzten sich beim preußischen Konig fur sie ein und sie kam frei. Uber Leipzig landete sie in Jena, wo sie mit ihrem Ehemann August Schlegel, dessen Bruder Friedrich und Partnerin Dorothea Veit die beruhmte Jenaer Wohngemeinschaft bildete, die das Kernstuck der Fruhromantik wurde.Nach ihrer Trennung von Schlegel und dem Tod ihrer Tochter heiratete sie den Philosophen Schelling und ging mit ihm nach Wurzburg und Munchen. Mit nur 46 Jahren Jahren starb sie in Maulbronn. Caroline hat zwar den Versuch eines Romans unternommen, kam damit aber nicht weit, dennoch sind vor allem ihre Briefe ein großartiges Portrat eines ungewohnlichen Lebens. Sie arbeitete nicht nur an dem Journal Athenaum der Schlegel-Bruder mit, sondern half August Wilhelm auch bei seinen Shakespeare-Ubersetzungen, die zeitlose Gultigkeit haben. Die Fruhromantiker um die Schlegel-Bruder strebten nach Ganzheitlichkeit und wollten das Leben mit der Kunst versohnen, so besehen ist Carolines Leben ein romantisches Gesamtkunstwerk. Vor allem war es ein selbstbestimmtes Leben, das Caroline uber die Konventionen spießiger Moral oder offentlicher Anerkennung hinaus gluckte.
