About the Book

Xin Changzhi is a Chinese survival village in Southern Siberia, formed as part of the mass migration from Northern China when global warming portended famine throughout China. James and Sylvia Marshall are scientists who had worked for The World Federation in Beijing. Following the worldwide catastrophic environmental collapse in mid-century, they and their son, Jonas, now live in Xin Changzhi. Jonas is married to Wu Jiao, daughter of Wu Renshou and Wu Huifang. Huifang is a shaman and she wants her Jiao to continue the shaman lineage. Jiao and Jonas have two young children, Congshen and Meiying. Buddhist lamas from Tibet have traveled to Xin Changzhi in search of the reincarnate of their deceased spiritual leader. During their stay at the village, they test Congshen, who has shown unusual predictive abilities. The high Lama is convinced the boy is the reincarnate and when the parents refuse to let him go to Tibet he kidnaps Congshen. The two grandmothers, Sylvia and Huifang, set out to rescue him. Meanwhile, more and more of Congshen's developing ability to interact with the Earth spirit is on display. He escapes from the lamas and is befriended by wild animals of Upper Mongolia. Huifang's spirit animals guide her and Sylvia to Congshen. On the way, they join up with the now contrite lamas and together they continue their search. When the group finally meets up with Congshen, they are astonished by his friendship with normally predatory animals. The lamas decide to abandon their search for the reincarnate and follow Congshen back to Xin Changzhi, believing they have stumbled on a spiritual being greater than their fallen leader. However, upon the group's return to the village, a group of villagers becomes alarmed by Congshen's unusual abilities and demand that both families be expelled from Xin Changzhi. The People's Liberation Army has a small contingent posted to the village for security and the officer in charge radios his superiors for instructions. It turns out Congshen, and now his sister as well, are not alone. A few children like them and about the same age have appeared in almost every Chineses survival village established in Siberia. The officer finally receives his instructions. "Protect these children at all costs."
