Gonz Chua Remembers: This book is an account of four generations of Chuas in search of a better life from the late 1800's to the present. It starts with my great grandfather's life in rural southern China followed by my grandfather, who was a literati but became impoverished due to a change of government and revolution. He died from lack of medical care. That led to my father's decision to migrate to the Philippines where my family endured the Japanese invasion and occupation. Included are stories of our family's struggle for a better life and survival after the war and my education and migration to the United States. Through the opportunity offered by this country, I was able to reach the maximum of my potential as a physician-educator and raised a family in peace and prosperity.
About the Author: Gonzalo Chua MD FACR Dr. Gonzalo Chua was born and raised in the Philippines. He graduated from the UP College of Medicine in 1964. He finished his post graduate training at IUMC in Radiology in 1969 and is Board Certified in Radiology and Nuclear Medicine. In 1972 he was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for meritorious service during the Vietnam conflict. He retired in 2000 as Chief of CT and Ultrasound and Director Emeritus of Radiology Education at Methodist Hospital. Dr. Chua was recruited out of retirement in 2005 as Clarian North Medical Center's first Director of Imaging Services. He finally retired in 2009 as Clinical Professor of Radiology, IU School of Medicine. Dr. Chua was named Best Doctor of Indianapolis in 1998, America's Best Physician in 2004, Outstanding Teacher by Methodist Alumni Association in 2007, and Outstanding Overseas Educator by UP Medical Alumni Association in 2009. He is a Gold Medalist of the Indiana Radiology Society and Fellow of the American College of Radiology. Dr. Chua was a founding member of the Chinese Medical Association, which opened the Asian Community Clinic in 2010. The clinic offers monthly outpatient services to Asian refugees free of charge. On July 16, 2011, Gonz was presented the Diversity Volunteer Recognition Award by the United Way of Central Indiana for outstanding service in the formation of the Asian Community Clinic. Gonz is a member of St. Monica Catholic Church of Indianapolis and is a third degree Knights of Columbus, St. Monica Chapter. Gonz is a practitioner of the art of Chinese brush painting and has conducted classes in the art at the Carmel Library. He founded the Carmel-Ink-and-Water Club in 2009. Gonz and his wife, Jean, have been married for 52 years and they have two children, Richard, a neurosurgeon, and Anita, a CPA. They have six grandchildren. Gonz is an avid practitioner of Tai Chi and loves to travel with his family.
