About the Author: MEL LEWIS. PGA of NEW ZEALAND From 1993 until 2007 Mel was the Golf Tournament Director at Braemar Country Club in Tarzana, California, a ClubCorp, Inc. facility. During those years he was involved in every aspect of planning thousands of fundraising tournaments. Helping charities achieve their financial and "attendee experience" goals. He also created and ran many seminars, taking charities and corporations through the steps required to run successful tournaments. Those seminars had such an impact that ClubCorp made it mandatory for all their clubs nationwide, to hold at least one seminar every year, based on his presentations. In 2004 ClubCorp presented Mel with their "Super Star" award. His Family History in Golf Goes Back Many Generations, all centered around the small golf-famous town of St. Andrews, Scotland. His ancestors come from three famous golf families, linked through marriage. The Robertson, Morris and Anderson. His ancestors have an unparalleled total of eleven "Open Championships" between them. Mel's family tree includes such golfing greats as: -ALLAN ROBERTSON. Golf's First Professional, his 1st cousin 4x removed. -OLD TOM MORRIS, his 4th cousin 4x removed: "Open Champion" 1861-1862-1864-1867. -YOUNG TOMMY MORRIS, his 5th cousin 3x removed: "Open Champion" 1868-1869-1870-1872. -AULD DAW (OLD DAVID) ANDERSON, his great, great grandfather: A St. Andrew's Legend. -DAVID ANDERSON, his great grandfather: Founder of the famous Clubmaking Co. D. Anderson & Sons. -JAMIE ANDERSON, his great, grand uncle: "Open Champion" 1877-1878-1879. From 1950 until 1954, following in his Anderson Family Tradition, Mel served a five year apprenticeship crafting hand-made golf clubs. In so doing, he became the last member in five generations of Anderson club-makers. From 1966 until he immigrated to the United States in 1982, he opened and operated a very successful sporting goods retail store in Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand. In 1976 he was elected President of the New Zealand Sports Dealer's Federation. In 1969 Mel became and still is a proud member of the Professional Golfers' Association of New Zealand.
