About the Book

The journal you will want to frame it's cover, it's that pretty! This bridge was completed in 1937, and construction started in 1933. It cost over 35 million dollars to make, and numerous people died during it's construction. In 2018 prices this is about $1.2 billion dollars. The bridge is above a nude beach, and about two people die every week jumping from this bridge. 2% of jumpers survive the jump. The impact is comparable to a high speed car traveling at about 85 MPH and hitting a brick wall. One officer saved 200 people from jumping off the bridge. One person left a note saying that if anyone smiled at them on the bridge, they would not jump...On the bright side, three baby boys were born on the bridge since it was built. The engineer behind the bridge was Strauss. He needed cables strong enough to support the structure of the bridge and bend 27 feet laterally in the Gate's high winds. That is why the bridge looks like it is bending two ways when the conditions are right. The bridge has been closed three times through 1983 due to winds that reached 69 Mph to 75 Mph. The company that built the Brooklyn Bridge 52 years before the onset of the Golden Gate Bridge, helped with the cable wiring on site in San Francisco by Roebling's Sons Co. The bridge suspension cables used technology to spin the cables, 80,000 miles of steel wire less than 0.196 inch in diameter were bound in 1,600-pound spools and attached to the bridge's anchorages. The bridge weighs 887,000 tons. The largest bridge cables in the world are in the Golden Gate Bridge, three bundles of cables wrapped around forming three feet diameter of cables that stretch from end to end, up and down. The cable wires are so long they encircle the earth in length, more than three times! The bridge length is 4,200 feet. There are 80,000 miles of wire used in the Golden Gate Bridge. The San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge is a beautiful bridge, and crossing it is a joy. It is nice to stop at the end of the bridge and park to look at it. The painting of the bridge continues year round.
