Verbiete du dem Seidenwurm zu spinnen, [...]" lauten bedeutende Worte, die Goethe seinem noch vor der Italienfahrt begonnenen "Tasso" (1780) in den Mund gelegt hat. Mit dem Gleichnis des Seidenwurms formuliert er seinen eigenen Status quo und trägt die für ihn als tragisch empfundene "Disproportion des Talents mit dem Leben" in die Welt: Goethe konnte nicht mehr spinnen, er fühlte sich seiner lebensnotwendigen Tätigkeit beraubt, räumte ihm doch seine Umwelt, die Weimarer Gesellschaft, nicht die Freiheit ein, die er benötigte. Der Hof brauchte jemanden, der funktioniert, der auf Bestellung texten kann - das wollte und konnte Goethe nicht, das Genie will dichten! Wie der Seidenwurm nur spinnen will! Das Werk "Die Italienische Reise" zählt zu den wichtigsten autobiographischen Dokumenten Goethes. Sie stellt eine Komposition seiner Reiseaufzeichnungen und Korrespondenz aus den Jahren 1786 - 1788 und vielen erst später verfassten Berichten, Essays und Reflexionen dar. Bei dem Werk handelt es sich gattungsmäßig nicht um ein Reisebuch, sondern um "autobiographische Spätwerke, die aus der Distanz von jeweils drei - im Falle des Zweiten Römischen Aufenthalts sogar vier - Jahrzehnten verfasst sind." Insofern gibt "Die Italienische Reise" Goethe die Möglichkeit, sich selbst darzustellen (das Thema ist Goethe ), aber auch mittelbar Stellung zur ästhetischen Situation um 1815 zunehmen - "eine indirekte Polemik gegen die Romantik und ihren Kultus des Mittelalters." Diese Hausarbeit soll den Weg Goethes zum Klassiker dokumentieren aber auch Diskrepanzen aufzeigen, die auf seine selektive Wahrnehmung der Gegenstände in Italien zurückzuf
