Jh. fand das Vampirgenre bei den Literaten nur wenig Anklang. "Erst als sich das Jahrhundert seinem Ende zuneigte, fühlten sich die Künstler und Dichter von der Tiefe und Abgründigkeit des Vampirthemas angezogen." Es erschien Johann Wolfgang von Goethes Gedicht Die Braut von Korinth (1797). "In Goethes Braut von Korinth plädiert ein reizender weiblicher Vampir für größere religiöse Toleranz und sinnliche Freizügigkeit und droht im Verstocktheitsfall den Ausbruch einer erotischen Epidemie an: 'Und das junge Volk erliegt der Wut'." Im Vordergrund der Analyse steht die Aufgabe, vampiristische Motive innerhalb des Gedichtes herauszuarbeiten. Die Forschungsliteratur ist sich nicht einig darüber, ob für Goethe beim Verfassen seines Werkes das Vampirthema im Vordergrund stand oder die antike Sage aus dem "Buch der Wunder" Phlegon Aelius von Tralles. Es sollen die zeitgenössischen Vorstellungen des Vampirismus im 18. Jh. vorgestellt werden. Worin besteht der Vampirmythos überhaupt? Der Vampir soll nicht allein eine Darstellung hinsichtlich des Aberglaubens als Nachzehrer oder Wiedergänger erfahren, sondern auch Verwandtschaftsformen wie die Femme fatale u. die Femme fragile werden beleuchtet. Inwiefern gestaltete Goethe sein Vampirmädchen im Vergleich zu den derzeitigen Vorbildern um? Innerhalb dieser Arbeit sollen antike Quellen herangezogen werden, welche Goethe womöglich hinsichtlich seines Werkes beeinflusst haben. Neben Phlegons Gespenstergeschichte könnte sich Goethe ebenso an den mytholog. Lamien orientiert haben.
