In the Neverending Lands, a group of Goblins are about to uncover a series of unexpected events that threaten to ruin the balance of the world. Is this the beginning of the end of times?
Concerning Goblins:
Under a thunderous mountain there lived a goblin.
In point of fact, there lived many goblins. There lived an entire nation of them. Because this mountain is not just any mountain, with decrepit old trees and famished goats along the edges of falling rocks. This is Mount Phoebus, and Mount Phoebus means greatness.
Legend tells of the creation of goblins going all the way back to the age of dragons, when the world was still raw at most. Details of this legend will explain why goblins are green, why their ears are pointy on the top end, and why they have so much energy to spare. But here we are at this very day and time, and speculations aside, one thing is clear, goblins are numerous.
Despite being many, goblins are clever enough to understand the value of secrecy. Bearing no advantage in size or strength against other creatures of this world, as they are only a little short of two thirds to a full grown human, and close to half the size of an orc, they prefer to keep their existence away from the minds of those who may bring them any harm. While goblins are spotted every once in a while throughout the land, most think of them as fairy tale material, bedtime stories for children.
Hidden inside and around Mount Phoebus, goblins will then pursue a wide variety of interests and organize their society into quite a complex and hierarchical structure of groups, clans and institutions. This inevitable growth into branches of different knowledge is due to the fact that goblins are filled with curiosity. Even the most quiet of them will most likely be advancing into learning more of this or that.
Above all goblins, sitting for ages on the throne of the goblin nation, is the ancient goblin King. Beloved by his kin, the King is then supported by the goblin Council, a collection of important figures in goblin society, that will participate in crucial decision making, mostly in cases that affect the nation as a whole. Now please bear in mind, to avoid confusion, that goblins will never consider being themselves a Kingdom. It is a nation, and a nation it shall remain, where grades of importance are spread and not concentrated at the hands of a King.
Amongst goblin endeavors you will find a wide array of interests, possibly too wide to begin mention of them all. What is key to understand at this point is that when new subjects of study are discovered, if not created by goblins, at least some greenskins will follow that path into many further grades of depth and unique ingenuity.
Never underestimate a goblin, they say. Never underestimate their instinctive motives to achieve some sort of grandeur, to be part of something bigger than themselves. There is a high level of curiosity running within goblin blood. One which will drive them through life, only to cease upon death, or not even, as some will still continue after that, pursuing the ways beyond the world of the living, into darker realms.
As of these first goblins that you will be introduced to, it should be noted that they are a tight group of friends. Being friends since forever, and bound to each other, in their own words, just as snot is bound to nose, they support the idea that, well, many things can be possible if you make them so. For them, now is always a good time to change goblin history forever.
