'So haben die epikureischen Gotter einen wohltuenden Einfluss auf die Menschen. Indem sie wie alle Gegenstande Bilder aussenden, erlauben sie den Menschen, die Anschauung des gluckseligen Lebens zu bilden und damit ein Ideal vor dem geistigen Auge zu haben, dem die Weisen sich annahern.' Seit der Antike sind die Epikureer mit Angriffen auf ihre Gotterlehre konfrontiert worden. Die Vorwurfe reichen von Atheismus bis Absurditat. Hauptargument ist die Unmoglichkeit der Existenz der Gotter im atomistischen Weltbild: Die epikureische Vorstellung von Gott als einem unverganglichen und gluckseligen Lebewesen scheint mit den Gesetzen der epikureischen Physik, wonach alles aus Atomen besteht und alle Atomverbindungen auflosbar sind, nicht vereinbar. Eine eindeutige Antwort der Epikureer ist nicht erhalten. Zur Auflosung des Gegensatzes kann man auf beiden Seiten ansetzen. Entweder nimmt man fur die Gotter eine besondere, unvergangliche Korperlichkeit als Ausnahme in der epikureischen Physik an oder erklart sie zum blossen Begriff, zur Gedankenprojektion, die als solche nicht unter physikalische Gesetze fiele. Eine zentrale Rolle kommt dabei dem Begriff, den man sich von den Gottern macht, der Gotterprolepse, zu, der aus allen Richtungen beleuchtet wird: Cicero und Diogenes Laertius beschreiben Funktion der Prolepse, Lukrez und Hermarch die Begriffsbildung. Philodem gibt dafur die theoretische Grundlage und erklart, wie falsche Gotterbegriffe entstehen. Zusammengenommen weisen die Quellen auf einen externen Ursprung des Begriffs, auf Gotter aus speziellen Atomen. Die Zeugnisse uber die epikureische Lehre von Prolepse und Gottern sprechen alle gegen die Annahme von Gedankenkonstrukten.
About the Author: Der Autor Holger Essler, geb. 1977, studierte in Potsdam, Wurzburg, Pisa, Oxford und Neapel griechische und lateinische Philologie, Geschichte und Informatik. Er wurde im Jahr 2008 promoviert und ist als wissenschaftlicher Angestellter am Lehrstuhl fur Grazistik der Universitat Wurzburg tatig.
