About the Book

Glimpses in the field of medical education and practice of surgery in the 1950 s and sixties in India in general and Madras in particular, from the perspective of a medical aspirant are presented in this book. A skinny boy of 17/18 years from a rural background enters the capital city of Madras, travelling by train for the first time and seeking admission in a Government Medical College had to face various types of problems. Vivid description of the hassles faced by him in getting admitted into Stanley Medical College and the Men's Hostel makes interesting reading. Friction between the 'freshers' and the 'seniors' and the initial instances of ragging had to be faced before being accepted into the happy ambience of life of a medico. Medicine, Surgery and Obstetrics & Gynaecology were the three main basic specialities those days. The evolution of General Surgery into various specialities and super-specialities happened gradually during this second half of 20th century in India. The General Surgeon was the jack of all surgical specialities as per his inclinations and interest. Having joined the Stanley Medical College in 1955 as an undergraduate student, qualifying for MBBS degree and later taking up and qualifying in General Surgery and Plastic Surgery and even venturing into Laparoscopic Surgery till his voluntary retirement in 2004, the author has been in the midst of development of these various surgical specialities and sub-specialities. Though in private practice, the author joined as a medical teacher under the then existing Honorary Medical Service in Tamilnadu state in 1965. Starting as Honorary Assistant Professor in Stanley Medical College, he gradually rose to the position of Hon. Professor of Surgery and Hon. Chief in Surgery in Govt. Kilpauk Medical College and Govt. Royapettah Hospital, in Madras/Chennai from 1976 to 1996. The author has briefly touched upon medical education in India and his own experiences as a medical teacher for over 30 years.Compared to Medicine (Internal Medicine) private practice in Surgery is an entirely different cup of tea. The surgeon has to wait for a long time before people could trust him with his knife. The trials and tribulations in the professional career of a Surgeon in private practice have been highlighted in this book. In addition, several do-or-die situations and serious surgical complications are specifically described including how these situations were handled by the Surgeon are explained. Fortunately, doctors and surgeons were held in high respect and trusted by the lay public and malpractice litigations were few and far between. Another interesting aspect of surgical practice was that the types of diseases and surgical problems vary considerably in different geographical parts of India as experienced by the author while working in various other cities like Pondicherry, Lucknow and Delhi. Some aspects of selection for admission in Medical Colleges, of medical teaching and training of a surgeon are also mentioned briefly. Retirement of a Surgeon, a hotly debated subject, has been described in detail, giving the pros and cons and finally justifying his own relatively early retirement to pursue his hobbies like gardening, music and cooking. Devoting time for spiritual pursuits during the retirement period was another reason for a planned retirement. The author has finally described his own experiences, goals and plans for reaching the Supreme Spiritual goal. OM TAT SAT.
