About the Book

English summary: Paul Tillich (1886-1965) was one of the most distinguished Protestant theologians of the 20th century. As a thinker moving continuously between church and society, between religion and culture, he was a decisive factor in shaping the early phase of the so-called "Critical Theory of Society" of the Frankfurt School around Max Horkheimer and Theodor W. Adorno. For Tillich religion is "what concerns us absolutely", and he considers the symbol to be the appropriate language to be used. The symbol opens up a dimension of reality which is closed to non-symbolic speech. Therefore we can speak of God only symbolically. In view of God vanishing from our current everyday life Tillich's philosophical theology offers valuable approaches to speaking of God in a credible way. These are taken up by the contributors to this volume and applied fruitfully to our present situation.
