About the Book

English summary: Cologne was the greatest cities in Germany in the Middle Ages and at its peak from 1000 to 1550 was one of Europe's leading artistic centers. Greater than Paris or Venice at the time, the city was the metropolis for economy and business, a famous pilgrimage destination and the cradle of burgher freedoms. It produced great treasures in all traditional artistic fields and remains especially well regarded in comparison to the whole field of medieval art. Painters, sculptors, and goldsmiths developed in diolog with the masters from Paris, Prague, the Netherlands and Italy an artistic language typical of Cologne, which was valued far beyond the boundaries of the city. The chief pieces, which were developed in Cologne and are now counted as masterpieces in all of the great collections of Europe and America, are brought back together again in their place of origin and combined in this volume. The multifaceted and typical works of old-Cologne art, from manuscripts and worked produced by goldsmiths to sculptures, glass, textiles and even panel paintings from over 500 years make clear the preference of every century for an exact discipline. At the same time the economic conditions of Cologne, its trade, the vigorous citizens and the relationship between church and state are also illuminated in this volume.
