La sua dedizione al mondo dell'arte fu totale, un'abnegazione totale come diceva di lui Mario Radice, "non ho conosciuto nessuno, dopo Terragni . che riuscisse a vivere come noi vivevamo, completamente estraniati dal mondo degli svaghi, dei divertimenti, dello sport, delle gite, della villeggiatura, del riposo. Si pensava, si parlava unicamente di arte," era andato in guerra per quel senso del dovere degli uomini di allora, e anche per credere che fosse stata giusta la sua esistenza, così quella guerra che ne era il frutto di quel credo, lo provò nello spirito e nel fisico, "vide morire molti dei suoi compagni d'armi e anche alcuni dei suoi ideali," quella terrificante ritirata dal fronte sovietico nel ghiacciato bassopiano sarmatico .. dove trovarono la morte accanto a lui cinquantasette mila soldati italiani, lo travolse profondamente nella psiche, . ma probabilmente il terrore di quella guerra gli fece comprendere di essere stato dalla parte sbagliata e gli orrori di quel regime, al quale lui aveva partecipato con il suo ingegno, gli dovettero affiorare alla mente creandogli profondi rimorsi e uno spaurito senso di angoscia "prendere coscienza della propria cecità e sentirsi colpevole verso tutti e verso tutto fu tutt'uno: fu l'epilogo esistenziale della vita di Terragni: spaurito non dalla guerra ma dal dramma che si era scatenato dinanzi all'orrore della propria vita, spesa in nome di una giusta causa, sotto una ripugnante bandiera: a cui lui, come tutta una generazione, avevano assurdamente votato la loro giovinezza."
