Recorrer París de noche en el año 1944 era una empresa peligrosa. Hay toque de queda en la ciudad ocupada por los alemanes. Sin embargo, esto no desanima a los que acuden a Colonels Renard, en el apartamento del señor Gurdjieff, para reunirse con su maestro. Hombres y mujeres de trayectorias bien diferentes: jóvenes o mayores, principiantes o experimentados, escritores o médicos, todos atraídos por esta enseñanza. Conocen la realidad de la guerra, pero con Gurdjieff entablan una lucha completamente diferente.

En Encuentros con hombres notables, Gurdjieff evoca su juventud y sus viajes con sus compañeros, los Buscadores de la Verdad, con los cuales va tras las fuentes de un conocimiento antiguo. En 1912 se dirige a Moscú y en 1915 a San Petersburgo, con el objeto de convocar a personas que deseen consagrarse a esta búsqueda. En 1917, ante la inminente revolución, se ve obligado a partir hacia el Cáucaso con algunos de sus alumnos. Tras pasar una nueva serie de pruebas, muchas veces atrapado entre las fuerzas zaristas y el ejército rojo, termina por instalarse en Tiflis (Tbilisi).

Es allí que Gurdjieff comienza a poner en práctica las danzas sagradas, llamadas a ser una parte integral de su enseñanza. Durante este periodo, el compositor ruso, Thomas de Hartmann, le presenta a Gurdjieff a Jeanne de Salzmann, una joven pianista y profesora de danza. Ella percibe de inmediato que el conocimiento de Gurdjieff corresponde con su necesidad más profunda. Se convierte en la alumna en la que siente más confianza y que, debido a su comprensión, permite que la enseñanza continúe y se extienda hacia las generaciones actuales.

El avance de la revolución rusa obliga a Gurdjieff a dejar Tiflis y dirigirse hacia Constantinopla. Desde allí visualiza establecer una base estable en Europa para sus actividades. Después de intentos en Berlín y luego en Londres, decide instalarse en Francia y abre el Instituto para el Desarrollo Armónico del Hombre en Fontainebleau, cerca de París, el cual atrae nuevos alumnos cuya mayoría son ingleses y estadounidenses.

En 1924, después de un accidente automovilístico que casi le cuesta la vida, Gurdjieff se consagra a la tarea de escribir una serie de tres libros titulada Del todo y de todo, cuya obra maestra es Relatos de Belcebú a su nieto.

Al estallar la guerra en 1939, a pesar de la invitación de sus alumnos norteamericanos a abandonar Francia, decide quedarse en París. En 1941 Madame de Salzmann, quien había continuado el trabajo con un pequeño grupo, le muestra una clase de Movimientos. Invita a dichos alumnos a participar en las reuniones en su apartamento.

Las notas que conforman este libro se tomaron en el transcurso de esas reuniones y constituyen un testimonio fiel de la enseñanza de Gurdjieff durante la última etapa de su vida.

Muchos han relatado sus experiencias con Gurdjieff, pero este libro difiere de los demás en que se trata de un testimonio directo de la relación de Gurdjieff con sus alumnos, semana tras semana: escuchando, preguntando, provocando, explicando, bromeando, reconfortando, exigiendo y siempre insistiendo en la necesidad de una lucha interior.

Los ejercicios que Gurdjieff proponía a sus alumnos eran dados de manera específica para un alumno o para un grupo de ellos, con el requerimiento para los demás de no intentarlos, pues su práctica los podría perjudicar.

La manera en que dirigía a sus alumnos nos ayuda a aprehender la correspondencia entre sus escritos y su enseñanza oral: la necesidad de tomar conciencia de nuestro automatismo y la falta de unidad entre nuestras funciones, la obligación de luchar contra nuestra pereza y los hábitos del cuerpo, la necesidad de experimentar la sensación orgánica de Yo soy, el despertar de la conciencia a través del remordimiento y la posibilidad de la formación de un Yo inmutable.
