About the Book

Voor de artikelenreeks "Prominenten van bij ons" sprak ik in april 1978 met oud-burgemeester Edgar Rowie. Na afloop van het gesprek overhandigde E. Rowie mij een getypte tekst waarvan slechts één exemplaar bestond. Volgens Rowie was er oorspronkelijk een Franse tekst, geschreven door de voormalige stadssecretaris Edouard Vanvelthem. Omdat hij de inhoud zo belangwekkend vond, vertaalde de oud-burgemeester het verhaal in het Nederlands. De stijl en de taal van het document laten echter vermoeden dat Rowie zelf de auteur is en dat er nooit een Frans origineel van Vanvelthem heeft bestaan. Na 34 jaar vond Rowie zich in de aangehaalde en fel gekleurde feiten niet meer terug. Het was allemaal zo lang geleden, vertrouwde hij me toe, en de tijden waren erg veranderd. Daarom schonk hij mij zijn enig exemplaar als een soort historisch document. Zelf heb ik nog 16 jaar gewacht, voor ik met de tekst naar buiten kwam. Thans is het bijna 50 jaar geleden dat oud-burgemeester Marcel Engelen werd terechtgesteld. De bevrijding werd dit jaar uitbundig herdacht. Het einde van de oorlog had echter ook een keerzijde. Er waren terreurdaden tegen burgers. Hierop volgden wraakakties en vergeldingen. De ingewijden weten dat ze eigenlijk weinig met de oorlog of de bezetting te maken hadden. De oorlog vormde een gunstige voedingsbodem voor het uitvoeren van lang geplande afrekeningen. Ook deze zwarte bladzijden vormen een deel van de Tiense geschiedenis. Misschien is 50 jaar nog te kort om de oorlogsgebeurtenissen op een objectieve wijze te bestuderen. Onderhavige tekst, die ik de titel "Gevallen Engelen" meegeef, is voor onze geschiedenis een interessante bron. Hij geeft een indruk van de gemoedsgesteldheid van de verfranste Tiense burgerij. Hij werpt ook een licht op de houding van enkele Tiense Vlamingen die zich vergisten bij het zoeken naar steun bij de bezetter. Dit boekje over Marcel Engelen bevat de volledige tekst van Edgar Rowie. Het document werd, met behoud van de spelling, op computer overgezet. Evidente tikfouten van Rowie worden aangeduid met de vermelding "sic". Het origineel bestaat uit 26 getypte bladzijden op A4-formaat. Deze uitgave kan derhalve, op de titel na, als een facsimile worden beschouwd. Dr. P. Kempeneers Tienen, oktober 1994.
About the Author: Paul Kempeneers, doctor in de Germaanse filologie, is lid van de Koninklijke Commissie voor Toponymie en Dialectologie (KCTD). Hij houdt zich de laatste jaren vooral bezig met de studie van de plaatsnamen in het oosten van Brabant.
